Organist Robert Poovey to Perform this Sunday in Good Shepherd
Robert Poovey

Note: This Sunday afternoon's recital begins 5 minutes earlier than usual, at 4:10pm.

This Sunday we welcome organist Robert Poovey from Rochester, New York, to play the afternoon organ recital.  Robert is Director of Music at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Rochester, New York, a position he has held since August of 2007. A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, he earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Organ Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music in 1989, and holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in organ from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Southern Methodist University, respectively.

From 1995 to 2006 he served as Director of Music Ministries at historic St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Atlanta, where he developed a varied, innovative and active music program involving some seven groups, with an emphasis on intergenerational participation. From 2006 to 2007 he was Project Director for Casavant Frres, one of the leading pipe organ companies in North America.
Notes for Sunday's Music

Adriano Banchieri (1568-1634) was a late Renaissance/early Baroque Italian Benedictine monk, living his entire life in Bologna. His setting of the Gloria in excelsis, played for the opening voluntary, is a series of short organ versets intended to be performed in alternatim with chanted verses. During his time it would have been typical for the organist to improvise these versets. Lucky for us, he wrote them down, and now we have a glimpse into the musical/liturgical style of the early 17th century.

The anthem at 11:15, And I saw a new heaven by Edgar Bainton (1880-1956), is one of the most beloved gems of the Anglican choral repertoire. Using text from Revelations, hope and optimism is heard throughout the work, both in the somber d minor opening and the brighter D Major conclusion. Bainton wrote very little choral music, and this anthem is certainly the most familiar of any of his works. After serving as professor of music at Newcastle Upon Tyne Conservatory of Music, Bainton and his family moved to Australia where he took up the directorship of the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music.

The closing voluntary is the third and final movement (a fugue) from Josef Rheinberger's (1839-1901) Sonata No. 1.  He wrote twenty organ sonatas, which are considered the greatest contribution to that genre since Mendelssohn.  Though harmonically Romantic in nature, his Sonatas are an obvious bow to Baroque counterpoint, and are certainly challenging to play.

Choir Tour to Louisville on Saturday 10/18 and other news...
St Luke's Anchorage,
Choir Tour Destination 10/18

Last spring the choir had to cancel their trip to Louisville to sing evensong in St Luke's Anchorage as a result of threatening weather.

This trip has now been rescheduled for Saturday, October 18th

St Luke's has appointed a new rector who is familiar to people who have been around Good Shepherd for any length of time.  Fr Michael Delk was curate at Good Shepherd in the late 90s, and is now the newly appointed rector of St Luke's Anchorage.  We're looking forward to being with Fr Delk and the entire St Luke's community on October 18th.  If you'd like to tag along with the choir on this trip October 18th, please be in touch with me (contact info below), and we'll be pleased to reserve you a place.  The cost is $25 per seat for adults and $10 for kids aged 12 and under.

Good Shepherd Choirs are always on the lookout for new recruits!  The most seamless time to integrate into the program is at the beginning of a semester, however, we gladly enlist new singers at any time.

On Sunday August 31st a choir recruiting announcement was made to the 9:00am congregation.  We didn't manage to get this announcement in to the other services that weekend, but you may read this announcement as a text document HERE.
