Notes for Sunday's Music

Sunday morning we welcome organ student Jackson Campbell as he plays the opening voluntary. French composer Lon Bollmann (1862-1897) wrote for organ, piano, orchestra, voice, and chamber music. He died at the age of 35, leaving behind a wife and three children. When Bollmann's wife died the following year, his teacher Eugne Gigout raised Bollmann's three children, one of whom, Marie-Louise Bollmann-Gigout (1891-1977), became a noted organ teacher in her own right. Bollmann's Heures mystiques is a collection of eight organ masses, with movements intended to accompany various liturgical actions. Two movements from Mass 7 are played today are Verset and Sortie. Due to the simple nature of this music and lack of a clearly indicated pedal part, these pieces are equally at home on the organ or harmonium, a keyboard instrument popular in France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Anthem Sunday morning is Handel's famous chorus from Messiah, "Behold the Lamb of God," a text which echoes the Gospel Lesson read today (John 1:29). Set in the contemplative key of g-minor, "French overture" dotted rhythms convey the text in a jagged manner.

Music Intern Joshua Bracken plays Franck's Prlude in B Minor (from Prlude, Fugue, et Variation, Op. 18, No. 3) for the opening Voluntary of the 5:00pm service. Written in 1862, it is a part of the larger Six Pices pour le Grand Orgue. The Prlude, with its solo oboe melody accompanied by flutes in the lilting meter of 6/8, suggests a pastoral scene of beautiful calm.

The Communion Motet sung by Cantabile at the 5:00pm service, the famous Ave verum corpus, by Mozart is among the most popular sacred choral works worldwide. Written in the last year of Mozart's life, the work was a gift for Anton Stoll, organist of the Baden parish church. In his classic study of the composer, German-American musicologist Alfred Einstein concluded that the Ave verum corpus, like the best of Mozart's church music, does not impress by its grandeur and the lofty dignity of its expression, "but by its humanity, by its appeal to all devout and childlike hearts, by its directness."

"Cantabile" to Perform this Sunday in Good Shepherd

The Cantabile Vocal Ensemble is a group of 12 dedicated, talented young men and women who first began singing together in February 2012.   Most of them are former students at Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School who are simply united in their love and dedication to quality music and its vocal expression. In February 2012, they voluntarily approached Donna Bonner, their choral music teacher during their tenure at Dunbar, about the possibility of singing together again. In the ensuing months, they began rehearsing a varied repertoire of acappella music on a weekly basis and have since been featured guests at several musical venues in and around Lexington. These include Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church, Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, the Henry Clay Home at Ashland, and Woodford Theatre. They are excited about their reunion with director Donna Bonner, who also directed the Dunbar choral music program for 16 years.   Mrs. Bonner, who holds an undergraduate degree in music from Berea College and a Master's Degree in music from Eastern Kentucky University, is also very excited about the opportunity of enjoying a new "musical odyssey" with her former students.
