Notes for Sunday's Music
This Sunday we celebrate Christ's baptism by John. Particularly appropriate to this day is the opening voluntary, the chorale prelude by Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707) Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam (Christ our Lord to Jordan came). The as an "ornamental chorale, the melody is found in the top voice, slightly embellished, played on a solo registration, while the left hand and pedal provide subtle accompaniment. Originally from Denmark, Buxtehude's fame came as organist of the Marienkirche in Lbeck, Germany. A highly influential teacher of his time, he taught and inspired the young J.S. Bach.

In 1739 J.S. Bach published his first (public) organ collection, Clavierbung III, a collection abounding with Trinitarian references (eg., there are 27 pieces: 3x3x3). Wir glauben is a fugue in five voices, the subject of which is derived from the German hymn sung with the text of the Nicene Creed. The gloriously strident pedal ostinato is thought to represent a strong faith in God. This work is sometimes called "The Giant Fugue" as the rising thirds in the pedal ostinato reminds one of a giant's footsteps. The work today is played from a copy of the original 1739 edition written in Bach's hand, or possibly that of his copyist.

The Anthem "This Is My Beloved Son" by Knut Nystedt sets the words heard from Heaven as read in the Gospel Lesson. The organ accompaniment provides austerity, seemingly coming from heaven. Mostly in unison, this short work captures the wonder, fear, and surprise of hearing the Word of God. Knut Nystedt is a celebrated Norwegian composer. A one-time student of the American composer Aaron Copland, Nystedt was organist at Torshov Church in Oslo and also on faculty at the University of Oslo.

Margaret Jones & Susan Weatherford
Recorder Duo Margaret Jones & Susan Weatherford to Perform Sunday in Good Shepherd

Reviving Good Shepherd's "Consort For Too Early Music," recorder duo Margaret Jones and Susan Weatherford have assembled a lovely program for this Sunday afternoon's concert featuring music by Handel, Loeillet, and Telemann.

During her academic life, Margaret Jones published books and articles on contemporary Spanish literature, received the Kayden National Prize for translation, an NEA fellowship, and held offices in national professional organizations. A long time member of Good Shepherd Choir, she has celebrated music for most of her life. Today she is an avid gardener, cook, and general factotum.

Susan Weatherford grew up in a musical family in Berea, Kentucky, and has played recorder and piano since she was six years of age, and has also sung in choirs and doing folk dance from an early age. Today she is a poet, cyclist, gardener, musician, vegetarian cook, and certified yoga instructor.

Welcome Music Intern Joshua Bracken

Next week we welcome Joshua Bracken who is joining us as temporary Music Intern for the next three months. Joshua will be with us for most mid-week activities and on Sunday afternoons. Below is a note of introduction from him. Welcome, Joshua!

Hello Good Shepherd!

My name is Joshua Bracken and I am a senior at Asbury University in Wilmore, KY.

I am a music major with a church music leadership emphasis. To fulfill my graduation requirements, I have to do an internship at a church with a good music program, and the Church of the Good Shepherd was my first choice.

I am a "pastor's kid," and grew up in the United Methodist Church. Liturgy has been a central part of my life and my family's life. Through this, I have learned that the church and the people in it take up a huge part in my heart.

I look forward to meeting you all and getting to know each of you!
