Racial Justice reflection of the week

One day, this March, I woke up in a hotel room in Memphis and wondered if we got it all wrong. So many times in the two years since publishing our book, “His Name Is George Floyd,” people have asked whether there is any hope for the country.

But four years after Floyd’s murder and the so-called great racial reckoning, we were set to speak in a city whose school system had decided our book was too controversial to be taught. Other school systems had stymied discussion about systemic racism, businesses were questioning their diversity programs, and affirmative action had been deemed illegal in college admissions. Some police reforms had been undone.

The backlash feels more enduring than the reckoning itself. And on that morning, I stared at the ceiling, asking myself: What if all that protesting that consumed the George Floyd summer — not all of the racial tension that had come before — was the desperate last gasp of a movement that would inevitably fail?

From the Environmental Justice Team

“For the second year in a row, Irvine has ranked fourth nationally for its park systems out of 100 of the nation’s most populous cities. In the Trust for Public Land’s annual ParkScore index, announced Wednesday, Irvine came ahead of other Southern California cities: Santa Clarita placed 49th, Long Beach 61st, Anaheim and Riverside tied for 76th, Los Angeles dropped eight places to 88th and Santa Ana came in at 93.The rankings are determined by how many residents live within a 10-minute walk to a park, amenities, investment toward parks, as well as how much of the city's land is allocated to park space. Another key factor in rankings is park equity, which compares park space and access in predominantly white neighborhoods with the same in neighborhoods populated by communities of color. The same comparison is made for income levels.”

(Besides the ranking of the park systems for the 100 cities above, the ParkScore index page also provides a gateway to data for all the cities in the United States. For example, check out Redlands, which has slightly lower park accessibility than Riverside: https://www.tpl.org/city/redlands-california
