Executive Director, New Smyrna Museum of History
As the summer has come to an end, our schedule is picking up here at the museum. September will be an active month with a museum program on the evening of Thursday, Sept., 8th with Dr. Camesha Whittaker. We were excited to get Dr. Whittaker back on schedule for September after an unexpected postponement in August.

The Museum will also host a special program in conjunction with The Minorcan Experience of St. Augustine planned for Saturday, September 17th at 11 AM. The program will begin with a short presentation about the Turnbull Canal System that will include a site visit to one of the more beautiful, and easily accessed sections of the old canal. Following a short break for lunch, those who participate will enjoy access to the museum and a guided tour of the Turnbull Settlement Exhibit. This event is a special fundraiser collaboration for The Minorcan Experience and is being offered on a "By Donation" basis, museum admission included. However, you must register to get information about where the group will meet to begin that morning. See the promotion below to capture the email you will need to RSVP and get the details.

On Saturday, October 1st we will be hosting an entry level geneaology workshop here in the upstairs meeting room at the museum. The full day workshop will be led by Deborah Edwards who founded the Southeast Volusia Geneaology Society, and was a former geneaology instructor at Daytona Beach Community College. Space for this workshop will be limited so sign up early using the email / phone contact provided in the promotional piece below.

Our biggest discussions these days seem to be around Night At The Museum. After a two year break as a result of Covid-19 we are excited to bring back our most enjoyable fundraiser of the year. This year we are expanding the event to include the southern portion of Emory Bennett Park. A special "Thank You" is due to both the city of New Smyrna Beach for updating the electrical service in the park so we could light that portion for the evening event, and New Smyrna Beach Utilities for their sponsorship that made it possible for us to purchase the lighting. The expansion of space will allow up to make adjustments to the way food is served for the event and will create more space for our live auction. We have some exciting items coming in for both the live auction and raffle portions of the event including artwork, retail items and a chance for you and three friends to train with the Volusia County Special Weapons and Tactics team.
Keep an eye on this email feed for announcements about ticket availability and a chance to buy raffle tickets for the evening's drawings, even if you can't attend in person.

October's Museum Program
Thursday, Oct. 13th at 6:30 PM
Join us at the Museum as we welcome Dr. Ann Browning-Masters, author of "Floridanos, Menorcans, Cattle-Whip Crackers, Poetry of St. Augustine". With three great-great aunts recognized as Civil War spies and a great-great uncle known from Mayport, Florida to Cape May, New  Jersey as a rum-runner during Prohibition, Ann Browning Masters has a colorful family history of stories to tell. But, she also has stories of common life that weave a quiet beauty around tales of resistance and intrigue.

July's Museum Program
In the event you were not able to join us back on July 14th for Zach Zacharias' presentation, Florida Forts, On the Edge of Empire, you missed a real treat. We all enjoyed hearing stories of Zach visiting the various forts as he worked on information for his book. You can view a video of the program here.
