September 2024

Dear Hyla,

We are fast approaching fall. Football season began today. School has started. A few leaves here and there are changing colors. Time is moving quickly. Lots going on.

Be sure and check out the great workshop opportunities we have from now until December. Definitely something for everyone. We are pleased with the variety of topics and instructors.

And music, and film, and great exhibits. What could be better. Come and visit.

Hope to see you soon. Bring a friend!

Enjoy!

Hyla

Executive Director

Current Exhibit

These are not ordinary portraits. Heidi Brueckner lives in Oakland, California and creates a lot of her work using Amazon Prime bubble wrap mailers for her canvas. She sews them together and adds many different elements to make her magic. For example - when you visit, see if you can find googly eyes in one of the paintings. The exhibit is getting rave reviews.

Community Gallery Exhibits

From July 24 through September 20 we will be exhibiting the work of the Applegate Working Artists Group.

In this group we are featuring the art of

News from August at the Museum (last month)

Our kids' classes this summer were wonderful. Here are a few that happened in August. Marjorie Brown taught a class on collage.

The students ranged in age from 7 and up. They used lots of techniques and combined things to make great creations.

Judy Crum taught a couple of classes. this one was creating a jar of fireflies.

Laura Davis taught a number of fun classes. This one involved weaving with yarn and wood.

Opal decided to draw a frog. She did a really good job we think!

Being able to take a piece of art home after a class is a real treat.

Robert Arias taught a drawing class. Here he is having the students pick out their favorite piece of art and explain why.

We can't leave out grown ups. Usually we have workshops for adults on Saturday afternoons. This one is all about book making taught by Cindy Hernandez.

Suzan Hatch brought all sorts of great things for creating mosaic art. The outcome of the class was that each person took home two great creations.

Karen O'Brien taught a Creative Generator class. Using all sorts of materials, the adult students made stunning art.

Deanna Morse, who is a pretty famous animator had a good time using vintage images for her designs.

Our concerts this year have been amazing. This one featured Ted Ganger from Germany. His original songs were heartfelt and wonderful.

Sarah Dion Brooks is a local resident and lent her keyboard to Ted. She was able to perform a couple of her original songs.

Angela Franklin provided a workshop about artists and aging. Her program included stories about well known artists who had overcome their physical handicaps. The picture above is Renoir, a victim of Rheumatoid Arthritis. He had to tape his brush to his wrist in order to paint.

Below is an example of Monet's work during his bout with cataracts - before and after his surgery in 1923.

Upon seeing what he had painted (which is what he had seen - he destroyed many of the paintings.

Here is Georgia O'Keefe creating pottery after she lost her sight to macular degeneration.

It was very heartening to know that physical challenges can be overcome with hope and perseverance. Adaptation is a key to overcoming many obstacles.
