EPA Grant Application Announcement

Representatives of Murray City intend to submit an application for an EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant for the amount of $500,000 to conduct community outreach, environmental site assessments, brownfields and cleanup planning throughout the community for an area called “Murray Central Business and Park Area”. See map below:

Brownfields is a term used to describe abandoned or underused sites where redevelopment or reuse is complicated by the presence or perceived presence of contamination. Environmental Protection Agency “EPA’s” Brownfields Program provides funds to empower communities to prevent, inventory, assess, clean up, and reuse brownfield sites. Community-wide Assessment Grants are appropriate for communities that are beginning to address their brownfield challenges.

Murray will seek to identify potential brownfield sites. Having a site reuse plan will directly influence how that site(s) are characterized, assessed, and cleaned up. Assessment Grant funds can be used for the direct costs associated with the inventory, site prioritization, community involvement, site reuse planning, assessment, and cleanup planning for brownfield sites. Assessment Grant funds may not be used to conduct cleanup activities.

A focus on multiple brownfield sites will result in more coordinated strategies for cleanup and area revitalization for an area-wide approach to planning for the assessment, cleanup, and reuse of these brownfield sites. If the grant is awarded to Murray City, Murray City will identify potential Brownfield Sites in the target area. Murray will perform community outreach through local channels and will review the suggested brownfield sites provided by community members.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially at Thanksgiving.

Stay Watchful When Cooking:

  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop to monitor the food.
  • Keep an eye on the turkey in the oven and check it regularly.

Keep Kids Safe:

  • Ensure children stay away from the stove and maintain a distance of 3 feet.
  • Keep them away from hot food and liquids to avoid burns.

Candle Safety:

  • Never leave a lit candle unattended in a room with children.

Smoke Alarm Check:

  • Ensure your smoke alarms are operational by testing them regularly.

Thanksgiving Fact:

  • Thanksgiving is the leading day for home fires involving cooking equipment.

Remember, safety starts with you!

*Please note: City offices will be closed November 23 and November 24.

Tree Lighting Ceremony

New City Hall,

New Tree,

Same Honored Tradition

Join us on Saturday, December 2nd at 6:00 pm at the new Murray City Hall

(10 East 4800 South). Santa will be coming via Fire Engine Express to help light up the city's new tree standing 70 feet tall on the plaza! The tree will be surrounded with four 20 foot tall, animated trees that will "dance" to holiday music. There will also be animated arches that visitors can walk through.

You won’t want to miss this celebration. The trees will be amazing and festive, Santa will be there, and hot chocolate will be served. There will even be a toy drive for those who wish to participate. If you do, bring an unwrapped toy to the event.

This free event will be a wonderful time to ring in the Holiday Season. Hope to see you there!

Murray City Library

Becomes FamilySearch Affiliate Library

If you want to be part of the popular ancestry search trend, you may not need to look any further than your local library. Murray City Library is now a FamilySearch Affiliate Library, which means it has access to more genealogy resources to help you make more family discoveries. FamilySearch is a world leader in family history.

There are only a few hundred affiliate libraries in the country. The designation means local library patrons will now have greater and more convenient access to the wealth of genealogical resources available through FamilySearch. The popular web service has over 6 billion searchable names and 2 billion images of historical genealogical records.

FamilySearch adds over 300 million free genealogical records and images online yearly from all over the world. It has amassed billions of birth, marriage, death, census, land and court records from more than 130 countries to help you discover and make family connections.

“Libraries are wonderful local gathering places for learning. We are excited to have Murray City Library as our newest FamilySearch Affiliate Library. It will help FamilySearch expand opportunities for fun, personal discoveries and family connections to the local community,” said Paul Nauta, FamilySearch Public Relations Manager.

Murray Park Centennial

Logo Competition

Murray Park will be 100 years old in 2024! Make your own mark on history by designing a logo for our Celebration! The logo will be used as part of Murray Park festivities on June 15, 2024 where we might see it on flyers, banners, even a t-shirt!

The Murray Arts Advisory Board may choose to recognize more than one design and/or create categories based on interest and number of submissions (for example - there could be a special recognition for Student or Professional entries).

Logo submissions are due by December 15, 2023.
