MURACO MATTERS

November 13, 2022

Newsletter from the Muraco Elementary School Parents Association (MESPA)

A message from Principal Leslie West

In my 20+ years in education, I can't emphasize enough the importance of being in school each and every day.  Research clearly shows that teacher effectiveness is the strongest school-related determinant of student success, but for a student that is chronically absent this reduces even the best teacher's ability to provide learning opportunities. Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance*. This relationship between attendance and achievement may appear early in a child's school career. Massachusetts defines Chronically Absent as missing at least 10% of days enrolled (e.g., 18 days absent if enrolled for 180) regardless of whether the absences are considered excused, unexcused and/or for disciplinary reasons. Being chronically absent can have a significant impact on a student's ability to read at grade level, perform academically, and graduate on time. If you would like to check your child's attendance, please check on Aspen and/or reach out to me or Lori McKinney.

TWO MORE DAYS TO DROP YOUR EXTRA HALLOWEEN CANDY

If you are interested in donating leftover Halloween candy, there is a bucket in the Muraco front office (as well as ones at Winchester High School, Vinson-Owen, Ambrose, Lincoln, and Lynch) which will be donated to Soldiers’ Angels Treat for Troops. The candy will then be given to our local troops and veterans as a nice treat to show our appreciation for Veterans Day.

The drive will be open until November 15th. We appreciate any donations!

Thank you!
