Ames Municipal Band Begins Celebration
of 100 Years on June 6
The Ames Municipal Band is proud to announce its 2024 season as it celebrates its 100th anniversary. The band will present free hour-long concerts every Thursday at 8:00 p.m. in Bandshell Park in June and July. Each week, the band will perform a different concert featuring popular music, light classical, hymns, marches, and music from Broadway and films. Each concert will have a vocal soloist and, at times, special selections, instrumental soloists, and guest conductors to help celebrate this historic anniversary.
All concerts begin at 8:00 p.m., and Bandshell Park is located at East Sixth and Duff Avenue. The concerts are free, fun, and family-friendly. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.
The Ames Municipal Band has 52 members, ranging from high school students to players in their 80s. The band rehearses each Tuesday night for its Thursday performances.
Dr. Michael Golemo is in his twenty-second year as the director of the Ames Municipal Band. Golemo also serves as the Director of Bands at Iowa State University.
Golemo says, “We are excited about our 100th season and hope to have something extra special at each week’s concert.”
The Ames Municipal Band receives support from the City of Ames and is part of the Ames Parks and Recreation program. The talented John Burnett-Larkins emceeds concerts.
