Hi Neighbors,

This year's National Night Out (NNO) was a success! Hundreds of neighbors, friends, and families came outdoors to create stronger neighborhoods at 8 NNO's through District 8! From the delicious BBQ at Meadowfair Park, courtesy of the San José Firefighters Local 230, to the lively entertainment at the Creekside Cabana Club, it was great to see so many neighborhoods having fun! Thank you to our neighborhood leaders who played a role in bringing our community together.

National Night Out serves as a bridge between community members and local law enforcement; and ensuring public safety for District 8 residents is my top priority. As a part of this commitment, I have been meeting with business leaders from plazas throughout District 8. Most recently I met with the Tully Road Business Association (TREBA) alongside the District Attorney’s Office, and the San José Police Department to address safety concerns from businesses along Tully Road. Together, we are discussing implementation plans for public safety tactics that can better address and deter criminal activity in the area.

Remember, if you see something, say something (and not just posting on social media channels like Nextdoor or Facebook). Calling 9-1-1 to report a crime or any unsafe activity not only helps initiate a police response but ultimately help law enforcement better track crime trends across our City and Council District 8.

Finally, the 2024-2025 City Council session has begun! One of our first major actions this upcoming Tuesday will be reviewing and adopting the statement of questions for the search for our new Police Chief. You can read more about this, and the recent parks bond discussion in our City Council update further below in this newsletter.

Best,

City Hall Update

Ongoing Prospective Police Chief Selection

On Tuesday, August 13th, the City Council will provide input and discuss community feedback in its continued selection process for the next Police Chief. Following adopting a Statement of Policy along with proposed questions, the City Manager and Administration will conduct interviews and present their recommended candidate for Chief of Police to the City Council.

If the City Council confirms the recommended candidate, the appointment will be announced at that afternoon’s City Council meeting.

Supporting our Police Department and our public safety resources is one of my top priorities. Stay tuned for more updates on this selection process.

Discussion on Potential Parks Parcel Tax/Bond

On August 6th, the City Council voted to accept the City Staff recommendation and defer ballot placement of a parks parcel tax or bond until more outreach can be conducted.

City Staff presented data from a secondary round of polling conducted in July 2024. Given the poll findings, City Staff and the Administration recommended deferral until 2026.

Continuing to defer park maintenance is costly and unacceptable. At the same time, we must ensure we are as judicious as possible with the resources we currently have.

Recognizing our role as stewards of our open space, I will continue working with residents and City Staff to review our park's expenditures and resources as we assess how our City can do better in all our parks. This includes working with community stakeholders and our City Staff to ensure we have effective groundwork for any park maintenance solution in the short and long term.
