"the courage of uncertainty in an age of self-righteousness, the liberations and limitations of habit, why the hardest thing in life is not getting what you want but knowing what you want, and how to live wonder-smitten by reality " Maria Popova
“I think the most important and most significant aspect of my policy perspective,” Harris said when she was asked about her policy evolutions, "is that my values have not changed.”
She acknowledged, however, that her experience as vice president has l update her views on certain issues.
“I believe it is important to build consensus and it is important to find a common place of understanding of where we can actually solve problems,” Harris added, seemingly nodding to how political realities may have influenced her views.

It’s been eye-opening to be away from the Palm Springs bubble and in the purple state of Michigan for the summer. We have loved our interactions with people here: the dentists, the pharmacists, the garage mechanics, the vets, the pet groomers, the aids, and the staff in our parents' facilities. Everyone has been kind, decent, and helpful—good, solid people looking after their families and communities.
We have interacted in a community with people who often share our values but have different perspectives. I hope that, as a country, we find a way to hold our strong opinions lightly and that we value a little uncertainty in our beliefs. That we take the time to hear other perspectives on issues and embrace the nuance and complexity of our challenges. There will always be the far right and the far left, but here, the majority of people are over the division, the one-sided rhetoric, gaslighting, and half-truths. As a country, I hope we find our way sooner than later.
I am not an Orwellian; I do not believe in a despotic future. Just as the individual is drawn by unseen forces into their journey, so are our communities and countries. The individual path is hard, and so is the communal. It is difficult to find balance and harmony within, and it is difficult to find balance and harmony outside. The two are intertwined, and our journey is in both. As always, I find my peace in the sunlight filtering through the trees and the sound of the stream tickling the rocks as it flow by them. There is always wonder; there is always awe at existence. Something working, flowing, creating that cannot be described, cannot be named. It takes the weight of the world off my shoulders and leads me again to a sense of joy, a sense of belonging.
Kim - Have a good week.

Women’s History
Women, We Should Know -
Ida and Louise Cook were unmarried sisters in their mid thirties who lived with their parents. One wrote romance novels for Mills and Boon (England’s Harlequin equivalent) and the other commuted from their sleepy London suburb to work as a secretary for the civil service. They wore home made clothes and shared a love of opera. They loved opera so much, they would go to Germany for the weekend just to see the opera there. In the 1930’s.
No one paid attention to them crossing the border, a couple of dowdy women in their homemade clothes, nor on the return trip with their furs and jewels. What Ida and Louise were doing, in addition to going to their beloved opera, was collecting valuables from would be refugees to help them in their new lives. The sisters would find people who would vouch for the refugees, find people willing to home them, assemble papers for them, and even rented an apartment as a temporary space for refugees just arrived. The sisters used their own money for this, so the refugees could sell their valuables for money to help them settle in.

Good One
Good One movie review & film summary (2024) | Roger Ebert
India Donaldson’s “Good One” is extraordinary in so many ways, but its most distinctive quality is how much Donaldson and her trio of actors (James LeGros, Danny McCarthy, and Lily Collias) trust the subterranean, and allow it to do its work far beneath the surface, between the words.

Book and Movie Salon/Club -
2024 Schedule 2nd Mondays 5:30 pm
"What do I talk to these people about? How do I share feelings and intimacies without revealing this huge part of myself? Who am I without this queerness that now pervades my life, my politics, my everything?”
BAM Salon will discuss the book, Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H., 2023. Sept 9th
This searingly intimate memoir, spans Lamya's childhood to her arrival in the United States for college through early-adult life in New York City. This story of courage, trust, and love, celebrating what it means to be a seeker and an architect of one's own life. Lamya H is fourteen years old when she realizes she has a crush on her female teacher. After years feeling out of place, one day in Quran class, she connects with a passage about a woman named Maryam. She goes on to make sense of her struggles and triumphs by comparing her experiences with famous stories in the Quran. An intimate self-reflection of becoming who you are.
Plan to join us on Monday, the 9th of September, 5:30p PST/8:30p EST for this telling read of self-reflection and embracing who you are meant to be.
