| | Four weeks from now, I depart for a backpacking trip on the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island. I first went on this trip at 17 with a teacher and other students. Later, at 25, after my 1st heartbreak, and again at 40, when I thought my life was settled and pretty much perfect. I look at the pictures of myself at 25. It has taken me a long time to embrace that version of myself. I was angry at her that she was someone that someone else I loved with all my heart would leave. She should have been stronger; she should have known more, she should have been the person someone wouldn't leave. Now I look at the pictures of my 25-year-old self, and I want to wrap my arms around her and tell her it's okay. There is so much she doesn’t know or understand, but she is young, and that is what her life is for. She can only see how she has failed; I can look past that to see what is lovely and see the seeds being planted that will carry her through life. Beyond all her fantasies and grinding mind, life will patiently set her feet on her journey over and over again. For with the intention of the heart comes grace.
Have a great week .. Kim
And Happy Birthday to my partner in crime (literally) Dorien. So glad they legalized it!

My book Travels Into Discomfort is available on Amazon.
It is a travel adventure in its prose and a journey to the heart in its poetry.
Travels Into Discomfort
The Japanese aesthetic of “wabi-sabi” means finding beauty in what is impermanent and imperfect. In other words, it is the Zen Buddhist concept of beauty seen through appreciating the imperfections in nature in which everything is impermanent. The philosophy nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three basic tenets: nothing lasts, nothing is finished and nothing is perfect. In a personal sense, it means graciously accepting your own and others’ flaws.
