This week we celebrate our fifth Commuter Choice Award nomination, a local government that put its sustainability principles to practice through a 1,000 respondent commute survey
Drum roll please for our fifth nomination in the government entity category . . . the City of Minneapolis Division of Sustainability.
The City of Minneapolis has recently set ambitious goals to rapidly reduce carbon emissions and increase sustainable transportation mode share. Specifically, the City has goals to reduce emissions by 80% before the year 2050 and increase sustainable mode share to 60% of all trips by 2030. The City got a critical push to reduce its employees’ drive-alone commuting when it began developing its new Public Service Center, located on a site that was previously home to a 1,000 stall municipal parking garage. To prepare for this change, the Division of Sustainability conducted a survey of the City’s 4,500 employees with the hopes of identifying existing commute habits and potential barriers. This was no small task as the City had never conducted an internal commute survey before. The survey was big success, with more than 1,100 employees (29%) taking part. The Division of Sustainability is now working with the Office of Performance & Innovation to assess the data, boost existing sustainable commuting incentives, and implement robust TDM strategies at the new public service center.
Our congrats to the City of Minneapolis and its Division of Sustainability for their cutting-edge planning!

Up next week, a person who led his company’s relocation to the heart of downtown Minneapolis.
