The 2023 MotoAmerica Medalia Superbike Championship Goes Through Gagne
MOTOAMERICA - When the green flag drops at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta for the opening round of the 2023 MotoAmerica Medallia Superbike Championship, the grid will have a decidedly different look than when 2022 season concluded.

For one, it will mark the return from Europe of five-time MotoAmerica Champion Cameron Beaubier. His return to MotoAmerica will be on a BMW M 1000 RR. He will join PJ Jacobson and Corey Alexander on the Tytlers Cycle Racing BMW squad.

Also coming back full-time to the series is Toni Elias. Also, Josh Herrin steps back into the Superbike Class with Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati New York. He won the Supersport Championship in 2022 on a Ducati Twin with the team and now takes Danilo Petrucci's Superbike ride for 2023. Xavi Fores will be on the V2 for Warhorse Ducati in the Supersport class this season.

Elias’ return to a full-time spot on the Superbike grid will be on the team he rode for in 2020 – Vision Wheel M4 ECSTAR Suzuki. In 2020, Elias ended the title chase in fourth on the team’s Suzuki GSX-R1000. Elias will be joined on the two-rider Vision Wheel M4 ECSTAR Suzuki team by Richie Escalante, who will compete in his sophomore season in the class after ending his rookie season in the championship P9.

Riding for Beaubier's old team, Fresh 'N Lean Progressive Yamaha, is reigning Superbike Champion Jake Gagne. He has won the last two titles and has been victorious in 29 of the 40 Superbike races held in the past two years since joining the factory team. Gagne starts the season as the favorite to win a third successive title.

Gagne will be joined on the Attack team for a second year by Cam Petersen, the South African coming off a successful debut season on the team’s second R1, winning two races and finishing third in the championship behind Gagne and the now-departed Danilo Petrucci.

The first round of the Medalia Superbike Championship kicks off their calendar at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on April 21st - 23rd. For the complete season calendar, more information and to buy tickets, visit MOTOAMERICA

Alex Rins Lone Star of Texas
MOTOGP - The Red Bull of The Americas at COTA was a crasher's parade, which allowed Alex Rins to win at the Texas track for the second time, taking his first MotoGP victory on a Honda. It was the first MotoGP win for Honda in two dozen GPs, the winless drought ending after 539 days.

There were a half dozen riders who went down and out in Texas and almost all to a man were low-side crashes due to a lack of front-end grip. But none of them were as impactful as the reigning MotoGP World Champion's crash from the lead. Pecco Bagnaia and the Lenovo Ducati team were gutted by the Italian's second straight DNF.

On just his third race for LCR Honda Castrol, Alex Rins pressured Bagnaia into a mistake, then rode flawlessly to take the win. Mooney VR46 Racing Team's Luca Marini put a pass on Monster Energy Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo to take second; his first MotoGP podium.

Just off the podium were the two Aprilias of Maverick Viñales on the Factory bike and Miguel Oliveira, on the CryptoDATA RNF machine. Marco Bezzecchi rode the Mooney VR46 Ducati to P6 and maintains the lead in the Riders' Championship. Pecco is 11 points behind his countryman in the standings, with Rins propelling himself to third in the wide-open 2023 World Championship.

Francesco Bagnaia: "I don’t know what happened. Like last week in Argentina, we worked so well during the whole weekend. I didn’t have any advice about losing the front, any movement all the weekend, pushing, controlling, doing everything. Today during the race, going normally, for sure I was going fast but I was in control. I didn’t do anything stupid, and I crashed. We have to understand it, I hope my team can help me with that. I will prepare for the Jerez race like always. I will go there to fight again to be the best and to be the strongest. I really hope my team will help me with that.

WORLDSBK - Next up for the Superbike World Championship is this weekend's Dutch Round, from TT Circuit Assen, which runs from April 21st - 23rd.

Unfortunately for Americans, the series is virtually dead in the United States. There is no longer a U.S. Round and the Dorna broadcast agreement with NBC Universal is sketchy at best. The only way to follow the series in a dependable fashion is to pony up and pay for the Video Pass, which is around 75 bucks a year.

Looking through CNBC's weekend TV listings yields Undercover Boss and Drone Racing broadcasts. The 8:00 AM listing on CNBC (race start time in the Netherlands) lists infomercials on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Be sure to drink your Ovaltine. To quote young Ralphie in the movie holiday classic A Christmas Story"A crummy commercial?"

Although we're disappointed in the lack of coverage, undaunted, we preview this weekend's Dutch Round. The TT Circuit Assen has hosted 62 WorldSBK races since 1992. Jonathan Rea holds the record at the circuit for the most wins with 17 WorldSBK victories.

Jonathan Rea: “I’m excited about Assen. I have a pretty good track record here, it’s a track I enjoy. I rode for a team based just up the road for many years of my career. I don’t know why I work so well here, it’s also a combination with the bike. I know Kawasaki is very strong here as well. While one eye’s on performance, you have to keep an eye on what the weather’s doing. Tough’s a great word. Although we have to try and start from zero and reset, and the results have been pretty poor, we can also draw positives from some of the races we’ve had; steps forward we’ve made with the bike. We haven’t put it all together. We’ve had two tests at Aragon and Barcelona to try a different direction with the bike and to focus on our weaknesses. This season, it’s been overstressing the front and the front tire, especially in the latter stages of races. We showed some good speed in Australia and Indonesia. The speed’s not in doubt, it’s about the longevity in the race. I think here at Assen should suit us especially with cooler conditions. It’s a hard situation to be in."
