Offices Closed for Memorial Day

Morehead City's Administrative Offices and Library will be closed on Monday, May 27th, in observance of Memorial Day.

The Recreation Center at 1600 Fisher Street will be open from 8 a.m. - 12 noon.

Police and Fire-EMS will continue to serve our community around the clock, and regular business hours for all departments will resume on Tuesday, May 28th.

Battle of the Badges Blood Drive

Morehead City Police and Fire-EMS serve our community every day, and now it is your turn to step up to do the same, through the Battle of the Badges Blood Drive! You decide which department to represent - Police or Fire - when you donate at this American Red Cross Blood Drive on Thursday, May 9th.

Who will win, by garnering the most donations for our community? Our goal is to have at last 100 donors.

This blood drive will be held at the Morehead City Recreation Center Gymnasium,

at 1600 Fisher Street. Appointments are available between 7 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Schedule your donation appointment online today through the American Red Cross

or text or call Kristin Willis, American Red Cross, at 252-341-1325.

Unable to attend that day or donate? You can still help by spreading the word and asking others to donate on this date.

Advance Morehead City:

A New Code for 2025

Follow along with the Advance Morehead City project – an effort to update the City’s Unified Development Ordinance, better known as the UDO. We have a separate website for this project, which can be found at advancemoreheadcity.com. Here you can follow every step of the process, including recent and upcoming public forums related to the topic.

A UDO is a regulatory document that controls the use of land through zoning, subdivision, flood damage prevention, and rules for parking, signs, landscaping, and similar matters. Every lot within Morehead City’s planning jurisdiction is subject to the rules in the UDO. It controls how land may be used and the process of review for new development.

The City’s current Unified Development Ordinance was adopted in 2001, and while it has been amended many times over the last 20 years, it has not been comprehensively reviewed and updated since its initial adoption. It is important to regularly review and update development regulations to make sure that landowners and business owners are properly protected by modern best practices in land use regulation. State and federal laws affecting land use are not static and can change frequently. All local governments are required to maintain consistency with State and federal laws. Court precedent also evolves over time and its important for the City to maintain conformity with the latest jurisprudence to help avoid expensive litigation against the City. There are also benefits from updating the development regulations, like the opportunity to modernize them with new technology - illustrations, navigational aids like indexes, and language improvements that make them more clear and predictable.

Revised Flood Insurance Rate Maps Available

The revised Flood Insurance Rate Maps and Flood Insurance Study report for our area is now available online. The North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program has created a website to share the revised preliminary mapping and to compare the existing and proposed flood maps.

The revised flood insurance rate maps and insurance study information can be found online at http://fris.nc.gov/fris/. For assistance in interpreting the flood maps, you may contact the Morehead City Planning and Inspections Office at 252-726-6848, ext. 119 or 103.

Stormwater Project Underway

Thanks to a $2.4 Million Emergency Management Disaster Relief and Mitigation Grant, Morehead City is currently working on a stormwater improvement project that will tackle issues along a portion of the downtown waterfront.

This project is taking place along S. 9th Street, between Evans and Shepard Street, and from the intersection at S. 10th to approximately S. 8th Street along Shepard St. This area will be closed down in phases, and will remain closed for roughly a year while work is underway.

The closures will also impact Jaycee Park, and Morehead City staff has worked with area event organizers to ensure they have sufficient footprint to conduct their regular operations. This will include moving Downtown Morehead City, Inc.,'s Alive at Five concerts to Katherine Davis Park, as well as utilizing space for the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament and the NC Seafood Festival, among other events in the area.

While Jaycee Park will be closed for the majority of the project, the boardwalk area, bathrooms and transient docks will remain open and accessible.

Currently, Shepard Street is closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic between 9th and 10th streets.

The $2.4 million-dollar grant from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety will provide lasting results, without placing the cost burden on our citizens. It will also set the stage for future expansion of this stormwater project, whenever funds become available again.

Ralph Hodge Construction was awarded the contract to do the work on this important stormwater project.

The City will provide periodic updates as this work progresses and we look forward to the positive impact it will have for decades to come. Follow along on our website and social media feeds, listed at the bottom of this email, for timely updates related to this project.

Thank you to everyone in the community who participated and supported the Crystal Coast Boots & Badges fundraising efforts on April 13th for the family of three-year-old Tucker Honeycutt, as he fights cancer. It was a dino-mite day for Tucker!

Morehead City is a proud supporting sponsor of these events. Watch the video above for a recap of the benefit ride and charitable softball game between area firefighters and police officers.
