We are very excited about the AMSE Foundation Gala planned for April 22. That evening, at the Doubletree Hotel in Oak Ridge, we will have an amazing program, including the recognition of the winners of our first AMSEF STEAM Art Contest, and the awarding of the first ever AMSE Excellence Awards. For the latter, Drs. Thomas Zacharia and Jim Roberto will be our inaugural award winners, and very deservingly so. I hope you will join us that evening – information can be found at amse.org, including how to buy tickets and how to sponsor the event. As a 501(c)3 we appreciate your support very much – this Gala is the first such event since the AMSE Foundation took over operations of both AMSE and the K-25 History Center in 2021.
AMSE and K-25 History Center Director:

What were once acorns sequestered by squirrels beneath the rich fall humus are now emerging as green shoots to greet the spring. Likewise, exhibits conceived last year have now fruited in our exhibit galleries. In addition to last month's opening of our new James Webb Space Telescope exhibit, the museum now hosts "Let's Play, the Elements of Electronic Gaming". Visitors can learn about the evolution of games from the first addition of solenoids to pinball tables to modern online and virtual gaming. And they can have fun while doing it: the exhibit features playable versions of arcade cabinets, pinball, and handhelds like "Simon.” A Periodic Table of Electronic Games displays the most influential games of the last century. Be educated and entertained with "Let's Play"

The Observing with NASA (OWN) Kiosk is here through May at least.
On Saturday, March 18, we will be hosting a Special Saturday Science Event related to Astrophotography from 12:00 to 2:00 for our visitors to come and experience creating their own masterpiece from space, smell the scent of space and hear the sounds. The visitors will also receive instruction about capturing images from their home computers and how to make their images into masterpieces of their own to share with others. This is an opportunity for all ages.

This contest is free to enter! We would like to thank our community partners for spreading the word about this contest. AMSE has already received several submissions from within the scientific community and a number from from Oak Ridge community schools. You have got to agree that an event where Ph.D’s and visionary Middle Schoolers are equals in their artistic interpretation, things are going to be stupendous! Special thanks to Jim Dodson for getting some of our student artists together. Educators of all backgrounds and vocations are the backbone of encouraging and inspiring the next generation of big thinkers.

AMSEF Educators, Lenell Wright and Corky Witt, enjoyed conducting hands-on activities and the Van De Graaff generator at the Y-12 New Hope Center on February 23rd, 2023, as part of the Y-12’s “Introduce A Girl to Engineering Day.” Around six hundred eighth- through 12th-grade female students from East Tennessee attended the event at Y-12 where they had the opportunity to meet and speak with women who work in the engineering field and participate in hands-on activities. AMSE was one of 29 booths which represented different branches of engineering to encourage exploration into areas such as nuclear, civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical, industrial, and environmental engineering for future careers. Students were welcomed by Amy Wilson, Y-12 Deputy site Manager and Keynote Engineer: Susan Kozemko, Senior Director of Y-12 Engineering during the event. This is the tenth year of the special event focused on making students aware of possible STEM careers; currently only 34% of the engineering workforce is female. Y-12 hopes to continue to make a strong impact on workforce development in STEM careers for the future.

The STEM of History (SOH) is a podcast produced by the American Museum of Science and Energy Foundation (AMSEF) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee with funding support from Humanities Tennessee and the National Endowment for the Humanities. This series examines the intersection of science with history. It focuses on tracing how scientific inquiry is interpreted in the historical record, and in turn, the impact of historical analysis to informing scientific inquiry.
This fascinating glimpse into how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) has been present throughout history shows no great feat has ever been accomplished without the aid of these four key elements. Listen to an amazing list of guests and contributors in original interviews “talk shop” about how the world goes round and attempts to improve itself with every spin.
The STEM of HISTORY has been developed with a generous grant from Humanities Tennessee and the National Endowment for the Humanities. https://amse.org/stem-of-history/
