Adele Seronde: Lifetime Retrospective Exhibition

"60 Years of Chasing Light"

March 15th, 5-7pm at Sedona Arts Center

For her entire life, artist, author and visionary, Adele Seronde has been profoundly moved by creativity. Captivated by the beauty that surrounds her, particularly nature, and sparked by her imagination she has created a bold body of work as an artist, author and social activist with Gardens For Humanity. She has created a legacy of vision and throughout March Goldenstein Gallery, the Sedona Arts Center and Gardens for Humanity will honor this longtime resident of Sedona in a life-long retrospective exhibition spanning 60 years with paintings of landscapes, portraits, gardens and flowers, and with the spoken and written word.

This Sunday from 5-7pm the will be a second reception with a book signing as this unprecedented show expands into the Theatre Classroom at the Sedona Arts Center.  Her vast body of work is too large to be contained in the special exhibitions gallery!

W e urge you to take this unique opportunity to  experience her extraordinary expression as an artist spanning and enjoy her body body of work that spans over 60 years.

The following Saturday, March 21st, there will be a panel discussion "Art is Not a Thing It is a Way" at 2pm.  Moderated by Karen Ely this panel features diverse voices in the arts including poets, writers, actors and of course visual artists.

On March 25th for the the 4th year Gardens for Humanity will present "Celebrating the Art in Earth."  This program presents to 3rd & 4th graders in five Sedona, Cottonwood and Camp Verde schools, which teaches earth, gardening and nutrition education using art tools, skills and techniques.  The artists are Tom Fox (Poetry) Nancy Robb Dunst (Music, drama& art), Patty Miller (clay, drawing)  Martha Edwards (dance) and  Maleita Wise (painting & sculpture).

The workshop for children will be held from 12:45-1:45 on Wednesday, March 25th at SAC. The children will  experience "dancing like a Tree"; learning an "earth song", and  art stories by Adele Seronde.  For further information contact Nancy Robb Dunst, Gardens for Humanity Art Exhibition coordinator at 282-0776 or nrdunst@yahoo.com.

"Celebrating the Art in Earth" is funded by the the National Endowment for the Arts, the City of Sedona, Yavapai Community Foundation, Arizona Commission on the arts, New Frontiers , the Sedona Art Festival and the Sedona Visual Artists Coalition.  A selection of the children's artwork will also be on display at Sedona Arts Center during the retrospective of her work.

On Saturday March 29th, from 8-10pm, Grand Finale Reception and Dance featuring the music of Fitzhugh Jenkins and Adele's granddaughter Katherine Perkins.

Like the artist herself her work is vibrant, lush and evocative.  A mentor to both artists and poets "I believe that art has the miraculous power of beauty which inundates and transforms both the creator and the world."    Adele says of her work   " As a painter, shapes, lines and color are my language, weaving together a tapestry of living greens, flames, sapphires and prisms."

Throughout her career, she has done portraits and landscapes in a variety of media, including pastels, pencil and oil paints. In her 20s, she studied under Karl Knaths at the Phillips Museum in Washington, D.C. and Bennigton College in Vermont, with Hans Hoffman in New York City and Karl Zerbe at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her expressionist landscapes have been on display at dozens of galleries including Weedon and Nova galleries in Boston, and Vigna Nuova Gallery in Florence, Italy.

Known for her unique style of painting, this artist, author and poet does not use an easel. Instead, she prefers to lay the canvas flat on the ground, often placing additional canvases around it expanding the painting.

In 1996 she founded Gardens for Humanity, which has been honored multiple times including the prestigious "Take Pride in America" award in recognition for outstanding use of volunteers in creating gardens. The Secretary of the Interior and the Governor of Arizona presented this award.  Adele describes herself as a "Gardener of the Spirit" and her work is definitely food for the body and soul. In describing her guiding philosophy in the preface to her book, "Our Sacred Garden - The Living Earth" she says:

"I believe that the planting of gardens, both in the soil and in the heart, is one deeply creative and healing action which can enchant people of any culture, race, or belief. Indeed, the garden is a metaphor for healing both self and community. It is the exploration of the symbolic Sacred Garden; the original paradise of everyone's dream; that place of lost myth and poetry, so needed today; a sanctuary of healing, color, and fragrances, of still and running waters; a source of fresh resolution in our hands and in ourselves by which we can transform the planet."

To her, the garden is a metaphor for healing, a source to love and nurture the Earth.

She comes from a family of artists and that tradition continues though new generations.   Son Antoine Seronde's photography, Daughter Jeanne Seronde Perkins' paintings and mixed media pieces, grandsons Cazoubon and Michael Seronde's paintings and metal work will be exhibited alongside Adele's work during the month long exhibition Adele Seronde: 60 Years of Chasing Light at Sedona Arts Center.

 Special Max Ernst Events!

The Sedona Art Museum and the Sedona International Film Festival will present special screenings of the documentary "Max Ernst" on Thursday, March 12 at 4 and 7 pm at the Mary D. Fisher Theater.

The film is part of the Sedona Art Museum's week of fun and educational events around two of Sedona's most internationally famous Dada/Surrealist artists, Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning, who lived among the red rocks for many years in the mid-twentieth century. It will be a multi-arts event, involving many prominent artists and organizations from Sedona and the Verde Valley.

One of the most influential and visionary artists of the twentieth century is celebrated in this insightful, feature-length documentary which explores the highlights of his fascinating career. With original film footage and photographs, the life and times of the incomparable Max Ernst (1891-1976) are not merely chronicled, but illustrated: the people, places and landscapes that influenced and informed his works.

Ernst's eclectic, nomadic life is traced, from his involvement with the Dadaists in Cologne, his central role in the Surrealist movement in Paris and his retreat to Provence to his flight to America and the desert Southwest and his eventual return to Europe. This map of the artist's life-journey is a rich portrait revealing the restless mind behind an utterly distinctive body of work.

"Max Ernst" features many scenes from the time he and Dorothea Tanning spent in Sedona.

Artists featured in Western Art & Architecture!

Goldenstein Gallery artist Frank Marquette and Glendon Good featured in Western Art & Architecture Magazine!

January- February Issue: Frank Marquette's durable sculpted Faux Bois Chairs (French for false wood) capture the magic he has shared on  movie sets including The Lord of the Rings.  For the past 25 years he has been a commercial artist and industrial designer creating environments and sculpture for a long list of clients both private and corporate.  Some of his projects include the pools at the renowned Atlantis Resort.

Faux bois (from the French for false wood) refers to the artistic imitation of wood or wood grains in various media. The craft has roots in the Renaissance with trompe-l'?il.

Frank has taken this tradition his magical pieces. combined with his years of experience both with life and as an artist to create these magical pieces.

Always striving to create an atmosphere that supported a story or a special setting has been his life's challenge and reward.

March-April Issue: Glendon Good is best known for his work combining non-ferrous metals (primarily aluminum and copper) with other materials to create custom projects for architects, designers and inventors. The Italian architecture and design magazine, Abitare, calls his work, "art and technology perfectly combined."

His dynamic kinetic sculpture pieces seem to dance in the garden to the rhythm of the wind.

Visit our sculpture garden to see the works of both of these amazing artists.
