Bowie Center for the Performing Arts April Calendar
Greetings!
Well, perhaps we gave Spring a miss and preceded directly to summer. Or maybe not, given today's thunder storms. The weather may be a bit confusing this year, but feel free to let our schedule untangle things for you! Tonight only, Bowie High School presents a Fashion Show benefiting the Senior Class. Then you can heat things up with the All Is Fair in Love Concert Theatre show from Rena productions. This Sunday, cool down with a Brass Band Concert from The Benfield and the Rockville Brass bands.
Next weekend we're looking forward to the Bowie High School Gospel Choir Awards Night. Don't forget about our upcoming visit from Beale Street Puppets as they preset the Fairy Caravan Puppet Show.
I hope you're staying dry and the staff over here hope to see you soon at the BCPA!
Regards, Jerry George, Executive Director

Since 2001, the United States Navy Band has been proud to host and present the High School Concerto Competition. This annual competition is an opportunity for talented musicians to perform with the Navy Concert Band. Encouraging young musicians is one of the Navy Band's education objectives, and the High School Concerto Competition provides an opportunity to work closely and feature some of the most dedicated students.
Each year, interested students submit audio recordings for consideration in the preliminary round. These recordings serve as the best representation of the students' playing. After the Navy Band receives and evaluates the recordings, a select number of finalists are invited to the historic Washington Navy Yard to audition in person. From this select group, the committee chooses a winner to perform with the Concert Band. The winner rehearses with the band at the dress rehearsal and subsequently performs in concert. The Concerto Competition concert is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year for both the Navy Band and National Capital Region audiences.
While the Navy Band is pleased to motivate and reward young musicians, the High School Concerto Competition is often more than a platform for students seeking a future in music. While many past winners have gone on to pursue music professionally, a number of competition winners have pursued education and careers in fields as diverse as biology, physics and engineering. The Navy Band considers it a pleasure to work with and inspire some of the leading minds of tomorrow.

Monday, May 13, 7:00pm - 8:30pm --- Bowie High School Art ShowMonday, May 20, 6pm - 7pm --- Bowie High School Senior Awards NightMonday, May 20, 7pm - 9pm --- Bowie Senior Chorale Celebrates 10 Years of Song "The Reasons Why We Sing." Wednesday, May 22, 7:30pm - 8:30pm
The Bowie Senior Chorale celebrates its 10th anniversary with its spring concert entitled "The Reasons We Sing." According to Chorale Director Craig Sparks, "Every song in this concert represents some aspect of what we are as a Chorale." The songs convey the many emotions the members of the Chorale have experienced during their lifetime. "We Are Family," a pop hit in late 1970's, personifies the heart of the Chorale, a big (over 110 member) caring, happy family living a life in fun through song. Songs like "Get Happy" and "Feeling Good" bring out the joy and happiness which have been a central part of the Chorale's 10 year history. Many of the members have been with the Chorale for all of its 10-year history, and a song like "Remember" brings back recollections of those who have passed, not just members of the Chorale but also people in their personal lives. "Let There Be Peace On Earth" certainly is in the hearts and minds of everyone. "You are Welcome Here" is a reminder that love lives in the songs we sing. Of course, there are many more selections in the spring concert. Chorale Director Craig Sparks constantly challenges the Chorale to achieve greater heights through the performance of ever more difficult music. This concert is no exception, especially with the performance of a rare vocal arrangement based on a combination of Beethoven's 5th Symphony and Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. As always, the seniors come through with a performance you won't want to miss and one that will certainly be memorable and a conversation piece.
"The Reasons We Sing" will be performed on Wednesday, May 22, at 7:30pm. Seating begins at 6:50 at the Bowie Center for Performing Arts.
Tickets are required and available at the Bowie Senior Center reception desk. Admission is $6.00.
