New Op-ed: "We all pay a price for doctors' moral injury"

In Becker's Hospital Review, our CEO Dr. Wendy Dean and Dr. Christian Macedonia co-author a must-read column. They write, "Following corporate imperatives, rather than professional oaths, has led to widespread moral injury among health workers... Ensuring choice and independence for physician practice and constraining healthcare corporatization are the best ways to protect patients."

CHEST Advocates: "Feeling Burned Out? You're Not Alone"

For the Spring Issue of CHEST Advocates, published by the American College of Chest Physicians, Denny Watkins shines a light on the dark mental toll of a career in medicine.

In the article, Watkins features Dr. Dean when writing about being "betrayed by the system." He states, "In her 2023 book, If I Betray These Words: Moral Injury in Medicine and Why It’s So Hard for Clinicians to Put Patients First, psychiatrist Wendy Dean, MD, argued that what’s driving doctors and nurses out of the health care industry is not just burnout, per se, but the regulations, policies, and cost-cutting measures preventing practitioners from caring for patients the way they are trained to do."

Comments on Federal Regulators' Request for Information

A recent cross-government inquiry by the Federal Trade Commission, Department of Justice, and the Department of Health and Human Services was a longed-for opportunity to speak out about the changes we all have seenas practitioner, administrator, or patientwith healthcare corporatization.

Our CEO Dr. Dean submitted her comments to these agencies' Request for Information (RFI) on Consolidation in Healthcare Markets.

For stakeholders across the U.S. healthcare system, Big Medicine has made healthcare riskier, costlier, harder to get, and lower quality. As such, this RFI was timely and vitally important. We applaud the FTC, Justice Department, and HHS for undertaking this Action.

Federal Agencies Launch Portal for Public Reporting of Anti-competitive Practices in Healthcare Sector

The Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission, and the Department of Health and Human Services have launched an easily accessible online portal for the public to report healthcare practices that may harm competition.

The online portal, HealthyCompetition.gov, allows you to report potentially unfair and anti-competitive healthcare practices to the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division and FTC. The launch of the new portal advances the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to lower healthcare and prescription drug costs and help create more competitive healthcare markets that are fairer to patients, physicians, and workers.

Founded in 2018 by Drs. Wendy Dean and Simon Talbot, Moral Injury of Healthcare is changing the conversation around workforce distress in healthcare and elsewhere. Moral injury occurs when employees are repeatedly expected, in doing their work, to make choices that transgress their long-standing, deeply held commitment to care and service. Moral Injury of Healthcare is a national, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
