Happy holidays on behalf of the Town of Weaverville!

A Message from Weaverville's Police Department:

The holidays are known as a time to shop. Weaverville is a delightful place to fulfill to your Christmas list but we encourage everyone to review holiday shopping safety tips so that you are well-practiced no matter where a wish list takes you.

  • When possible, shop during daylight hours. If it’s dark, park in well-lit public areas. Be mindful of who and what is parked around you. Take a moment to note (or snap a cell phone picture) where you have parked so that you don’t find yourself wandering and distracted when you return to your vehicle.

  • Shop with a friend and watch out for each other. Communicate openly when something doesn’t seem right. Be wary of strangers who approach you in hopes to take advantage of your giving spirit.

  • Make sure to lock your vehicle’s doors. Take your packages to your car and store them in the trunk or out of plain view. Out of sight, out of mind for the opportunistic thieves!

  • Keep your purse close to your body, preferably in front of you. Carry your wallet in a front pocket if possible. Avoid carrying much money, but if you are shopping with cash, don’t take it out until it is time to pay. Don’t flash your cash.

  • Report crimes when they occur. Speaking with a police officer can help generate vital information that can be utilized to help solve your crime. Police response to a location can also serve as a powerful deterrent to predators still in the area.

Water Conservation Tips for Residents:

Water Conservation in the Kitchen:

  • When cooking, peel and clean vegetables in a large bowl of water instead of under running water.
  • Fill your sink or basin when washing and rinsing dishes.
  • Only run the dishwasher when it's full.
  • When buying a dishwasher, select one with a "light-wash" option.
  • Only use the garbage disposal when necessary (composting is a great alternative).
  • Install faucet aerators.

New Garbage Toters Required by Town

In order to provide for safer and more efficient garbage pick-up the Town of Weaverville will be changing to an automated side-loading garbage truck in the coming months. This change in operations will require all garbage customers to use a Town-approved garbage toter. These toters have been available for purchase through the Town for several years and many customers are currently using them.

If you do not currently have a Town-approved toter in use, one will be delivered to you beginning in October. This delivery is a large undertaking and will take several months to complete, but all toters will be delivered prior to the end of December 2022.

The one-time cost of each toter is $55 and that amount will be added to your water bill in January 2023. If you would prefer to be put on a payment plan providing for 5 monthly payments of $11, please contact the Town immediately at 828-645-7116 and those arrangements will be made. Residents that are not Town water customers will be billed directly. Questions concerning the toters should be directed to the Public Works Department at 828-645-0606 or ecutshall@weavervillepublicworks.org. Billing questions should be directed to Town Hall at 828-645-7116 or mworley@weavervillenc.org.

DECEMBER HIGHLIGHTS

Musical Concert. Friday, Dec 2nd, 7-8:30 PM. Tumo Kohrs will make their Weaverville debut at the Community Center. This very talented duo will perform covers of Billy Joel, Carol King, Joni Mitchell, plus enthrall us with some of Sarah Kohrs original love songs before playing a few seasonal favorites for a singalong to help us all get into the holiday spirit. Mark Tumo & Sarah Kohrs have recently performed at Isis, Grey Eagle, and The Guitar Bar here in Asheville. Please note we will have an "appreciation basket" for attendees, if they choose, to tip our entertainers.

Theatrical Production. Sunday, Dec 18th, 7:-8:30 PM. Ancestral Voices, Written by A.R.Gurney, Directed by Marc Cameron. Produced by Dreamweaver Productions, From Donald Lyons, Theater Critic for the New York Post: “If the family is the key theme of American drama, A R Gurney's Ancestral Voices: A Family Story, is a beautiful chamber work in that great tradition. The short play [takes place] in Buffalo NY between 1935 and 1942, with a brief coda from the 1960’s… This is a magical play, not a mere exercise in uncritical nostalgia, but a nuanced reminiscence full of time and change and loss - as well as joy.” Please note we will have an "appreciation basket" for attendees, if they choose, to tip our entertainers.

Line Dancing. Please note that Kae Mance is stepping to the side as Bonnie Russolillio, (bonnieruss1@icloud.com), and Nina Denninger (nina.denninger@gmail.com) will take over as lead instructors. Kae, thank you for your incredible energy and volunteerism for starting up and maintaining these classes for the last year. And thank you to Bonnie and Nina for stepping up to keep these classes going into 2023.

Local musicians Dr. Mark and Dylan Morris plus George Buckner will celebrate the life and music of famed banjo and bluegrass artist, Earl Scruggs through the lens of their personal relationships with Scruggs. This event will explore the career of Earl Scruggs through storytelling, home movies, and plenty of live music featuring the 5-string banjo played in the three finger style that Scruggs made famous here in Western NC. More details will follow in our mid-December and January Blog

Addressing Your Aches and Stiff Joints: We are soon to finalize a workshop for people with arthritis and persistent joint pain to be taught by local physical therapist and clinic owner, Angel Trail, PT, OCS. This 3-class series will be part informational and part active participation as you will learn exercises to help decrease pain and increase motion for address your aches and pains. This class is open to any person with aches, pains, and stiffness regardless of whether you have been diagnosed with arthritis. This is a beginner level class that is appropriate for people who are new to exercising or may not have exercised for some time. No equipment is required. We will be using chairs and resistance bands which will be provided. We are currently looking at Monday/Thursday/Monday from 9:00-10:00 AM for these 3-class sessions to be held in the Multipurpose Room. More details and actual start dates will follow in our mid-December and January Blogs.

Poets Gathering. Finally, we have had several inquiries to start up a gathering of local poets where they might share their craft with fellow poetry enthusiasts whether published pros or mere novices to the creative process. The mission of this activity would be to advance the act of writing poetry by sharing techniques, inspirations, personal journeys, and offering mutual support. Please let us know if this is something that you (and your fellow poet friends) would like us to set up as a monthly/weekly event by emailing us at wcchl@weavervillenc.com.

Finally, as we bring another calendar year to a close, our Board would be remiss if we did not once again extend a personal Thank You to our incredible volunteers. Without their generous spirit of volunteerism and unique skillsets, none of this exceptional programming would be possible. Our volunteers are amazing, so please reach out to thank them when you have an opportunity. As always, should you have any questions about our WCCHL sponsored programming don’t hesitate to contact us at wcchl@weavervillenc.org

Respectfully,

Tom
