BACK-TO-SCHOOL

It is back to school time again. Buncombe County Schools' first day for students is August 28th, 2023. This means more families will be walking and driving on the roads. School buses will be back out as well. Motorists will need to take extra care behind the wheel.

We as a community can help our children get to and from school safely by avoiding all distractions while driving and by following some important safety rules:

  • Reduce your speed, pay attention, and obey traffic laws in school zones and neighborhoods surrounding schools.
  • Be ready to stop at all times.
  • Wait patiently for children to complete their crossing before you proceed.
  • Try to make eye contact with children who are waiting to cross the road.
  • Do not load and unload children into vehicles across the street from the school. Unload on the same side of the road as the school.
  • Don’t double park in the school zone – this blocks visibility for other children and vehicles.
  • Never pass a vehicle that has stopped for pedestrians.
  • When traveling behind a bus, follow at a greater distance than you would when following another car – this will give you more time to stop once yellow lights begin to flash.
  • Do not block crosswalks when stopped – this act forces pedestrians to go around you and puts them in the path of moving traffic.
  • Watch for children arriving late for the bus – they may dart across the street without heeding traffic.
  • STOP!! Always stop when directed to do so by law enforcement or school staff.
  • SEE RED - Traffic should stop in both directions on an undivided roadway when the stop sign on a school bus is fully extended, and students are exiting the bus.
  • NEVER pass a school bus on the right.

Don’t forget to have PATIENCE!!! Thank you: Assistant Police Chief Somer Oberlin, Weaverville Police Department

Late Fees- A Message from the Utility Department

checkbook-pen.jpg

Starting September 2023, the Town will be implementing late fees on all past due water bills. If a water bill has not been paid by the last day of the month it is due, a late fee will be added to the balance on the account. This will become effective with our August 30th bills that will be due by September 20th. If we do not receive payment by September 30th, a late fee will automatically be added to the balance.

Weaverville Police Department Internship Program

The Weaverville Police Department Internship Program provides real life experiences beneficial to both the students and the workforce. While receiving college credits for internship completion, the student learns tasks and project skills benefiting various departments. Focus is on an innovative approach to allowing recruits to become knowledgeable about all government agencies, thus giving interns more exposure to municipal government. Work is primarily with the Weaverville Police Department before beginning Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET). This model was introduced by Assistant Police Chief Oberlin. We commend her initiative, creativity, and work in developing some guidelines and mentoring our intern.

Town of Weaverville Staff welcomes Ben!

“I think this will be a great way to get youth in our community interested in law enforcement and local government for the future!”, Town Manager Coffey.

Carrie will share tips on ways to collect indoor plants, how to properly care for and fertilize them, how to use them in home décor, and how to propagate to help your indoor garden flourish. The presentation will include live plants for inspiration, a propagation demonstration, and a slideshow with example photos. All are welcome to attend. A business meeting will immediately follow the program.

The Garden Club of Weaverville is a co-ed, non-profit organization open to everyone. For more information on what we do, becoming a member or supporting the club visit our website, GardenClubofWeaverville.org.

A Final Goodbye…

I just learned about the passing of one of our original 12 Volunteers, Mrs. Kae Mance. For those of you who enjoyed her Line Dancing Classes, you knew her to be a force of nature, with a love for dance, and an infectious smile. For those who came to hear her speak about her book 'Live Well to Die Well' back in April, you witnessed a uniquely inspiring and courageous presentation.  Our condolences go out to her husband Andy, and the entire Mance family. Funeral services will take place at the Land of Sky United Church in Asheville, NC at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 26th
