Monthly Pupdate - all the mews you can use

July 2024

Kim,

One of the best things about working at Homeward Pet is our commitment to each animal as an individual. We recognize that each dog and cat is a unique being and care plans and approaches are changed as needed for the well-being and success of the animal.

In Kara’s case, we quickly saw that shelter life wasn’t working for her. She was overwhelmed and anxious, spending her days hunkering down in her kennel, afraid to go outside for walks. As each day passed, Kara’s world shrank more and more. So, staff re-evaluated her plan and decided finding a foster home for her would be the best next step in helping her succeed.

And that’s where I came in! I brought Kara home to foster, to give her a kennel break, time to decompress, and a comfortable spot to build her confidence. For the first 24 hours, Kara’s body was able to finally relax, and she slept hard. There was plenty of snoring! We had Kara in our home for about 4-months, giving her as much time to get adopted as necessary.

Kara’s transformation was slow-moving at times, going from being too afraid to even step outside, to walking 20-feet down the driveway, to looking forward to her daily 1-mile walk. But all along the way, it’s been a once in a lifetime experience for us, watching her explore, learn to believe in herself, and show her true personality.

Over the months, watching Kara transform into the dog she is today, seeing her bonds strengthen with my other dogs, all while my bond with her was growing; it became clear I needed her as much as she needed me.

After 4-months with us, it was time to adopt her into the family! This success story would not have been possible without Homeward Pet’s commitment to each animal, giving them as much time as they need, never rushing the process, and considering each dog and cat as an individual.

Thank you for your continued support of Homeward Pet.

#DIDYOUKNOW

We are often the first point of contact when someone finds a lost or stray animal. When that happens, we can scan for a microchip and provide lost pet resources, but Homeward Pet Adoption Center does not provide Animal Control Services and does not take in stray or found animals.

However, we do work very closely with the agencies that do. Once the animal has been surrendered to the appropriate agency and gone through the legal hold times, they may be transferred to rescues like Homeward Pet for adoption.

Some cities manage their own animal control agencies, while other cities have contracts with a specific shelter to provide certain services to residents within their contracted jurisdictions.

If you have found an animal or lost a pet, contact the facility in your area for assistance. Because pets can wander, if you are searching for a lost pet it is recommended that you also contact other nearby Animal Control Services.

If you need assistance with a loose animal, or have concerns about animal cruelty, call your local Police Department.

Always exercise caution when interacting with an unfamiliar animal, and never attempt to catch an animal that is behaving aggressively. In an emergency, dial 911.

To find the names and contact information for animal control services in your area, download this pdf from our site and keep it handy.

ABOUT HOMEWARD PET

Homeward Pet Adoption Center is one of the leading non-profit, no-kill animal shelters in Washington State.

Our mission is to transform the lives of cats and dogs in need through compassionate medical care, positive behavior training, and successful adoption while building a more humane community.

Homeward Pet is a private organization. We receive no state or federal funding. Your donations help us to grow a robust program that spans beyond simply intake and adoption. Enlisting the principles and practices of Fear Free Sheltering, the animals in our care are assessed as individuals and receive behavioral, medical, and in-home foster care as needed. Because of the generous support of donors and volunteers, we can care for animals that others may not have the resources for.

In addition, we provide free behavior consultations and low cost spay/neuter services to keep animals out of the shelter system and in their homes. We can work with owners to find a way to keep their pets. If an animal must be rehomed, we offer Home to Home to help owners match up directly with new adopters so that the animal never has to spend a day in the shelter.
