BELONGING - PURPOSE - CURIOSITY

Message From The Principal:

Dear Mead Learning Options Families,

We have had a great first week of school.  Lots of energy and excitement as families have come into the building to get ready for the school year.  As we look forward to the routine of on-site classes and clubs, I'd like to share some important information regarding before and after school routines as well as Breakfast/lunch and recess routines.  Please take some time to look over the following information.  WARNING…This is a LONG email with a lot of information so please keep it handy for future reference.

Warmly,

Mr. Edwards

This is a reminder that Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are our busiest days at the PLC building.  At any point we may have around 250 students on campus from various programs.  In an attempt to make sure everyone follows the same process for Drop off/pick-up please take note of the following information.

Morning Drop Off for ALL PROGRAMS:   PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE LOOP.  Please drop your students off at school as close to the start of the school day as possible.  We do not have supervision in the morning to allow students to come inside and wait for long periods of time.   Please see the daily schedule below for when we will allow students to enter the building.

Monday:

  • Five Mile High School: 8:35am
  • North Star: 9:00am
  • Five Mile Elementary: 9:15am

Tuesday:

  • Five Mile Middle School:  8:30am
  • Five Mile Elementary Clubs: 9:00am

Wednesday:

  • Five Mile High School:  8:35am
  • North Star: 9:00am
  • Five Mile Elementary: 9:15am

Thursday:

  • Five Mile Middle School: 8:30am

Breakfast (NEW!) and Ordering Lunch:

We are excited to announce that Mead Learning Options qualifies for free breakfast and free lunch for ALL students for the 2024-2025 school year! This is part of the federal Provision 2 program.   Since this is a federal program, we must abide by certain rules.  Please read the following bullet points carefully so you know the guidelines, should your child choose to get breakfast at the PLC building in the morning.

When students come into the building, we will have a breakfast cart inside the front doors.  A staff member will be standing next to the breakfast cart to make sure students take all the required items.  The required items (to qualify as a free meal) are an Entree (items such as a prepackaged muffin or a breakfast bar) and a fruit or a juice.  We will have milk available too but students are NOT required to take milk to qualify for a free meal.

  • Breakfast will be grab and go. This means that all the items are pre-packaged so students are able to take them to class.  Students who take breakfast will eat in their first period class or club.
  • If your child(ren) would like to purchase milk without a meal, they must have money on their meal account.  Remember free meals are those ONLY those that qualify by taking an entree AND a fruit or juice.
  • Free meals are limited to 1 breakfast and 1 lunch each day.
  • MOS Students:  For students who attend Mead Outdoor School, parents are welcome to come by the PLC building before school and pick up a breakfast.  At this point in time, we are unable to have breakfast served at the Dart Lo campus.

***NOTE*** This may sound complicated but once your child goes through it once or twice, they'll get the hang of it.  Our staff is here to help, as well!

Lunch Orders:  If you are ordering lunch, you will use the same process as last year.  It is extremely helpful and more efficient if our families order lunches from our online order form.  This can be done the night before school.  Students who do not order lunch using this form, can let our staff know that they need lunch when they arrive at school each morning.  Again, I'd encourage everyone to take advantage of the online order form, when possible.

MLO Lunch Order Form

Lunch/Recess:  Students will eat at lunch tables in the gym.

  • Most of our students bring their own lunches, which is great!  Please make sure you pack lunch items that your child can open on their own.
  • For our Five Mile Elementary and North Star Students, they will eat lunch and then go outside for recess.  Recess will be located at Farwell Elementary's playground.  There is a huge grass area, blacktop area with basketball hoops and a playground.

Afternoon Pickup for ALL PROGRAMS (Except Five Mile Elementary) PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE LOOP and PLEASE do not get out of your car when you are in the loop line.   Due to the volume of traffic at the Pittsburg Learning Center, we are implementing the following plan for all programs on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Process when picking up your child(ren):

  • Students will be directed towards the end of the loop, where they will wait for you.  Once you are within the last 4/5 cars in the loop line, we will release your child to your car.  We will try our best to get students out of class on time.  (SEE DIAGRAM BELOW).  If waiting in the loop line is stressful for you OR if you do not want to wait in the line, you are welcome to park along Pittsburg Rd, or Center St. and walk out to meet your child in the front of the building.

  • Another alternative to waiting in the loop line is to make a pick up plan with your child before your next day of school.  We do have some families who have shown their children where they are parked, and then they just wait for their children to meet them at that location.

Five Mile Elementary: MONDAY and WEDNESDAY CLASSES AND TUESDAY CLUBS

  • Parents will meet their children outside the 200 hall exit.  If you were in the program last year, it is the same routine.  For new parents, please connect with your child's teacher and make sure you know the pick up location.  Students will exit the building out the front doors for Clubs on Tuesday. See map below.
