Learning for Our Community

One of the most enjoyable aspects of my work here at the CDP is listening to our clients, residents, community & business leaders, elected/appointed officials and donors in order to gain a deeper understanding of their concerns for our region.

As a community development corporation, the CDP is deeply committed to engaging with a broad range of folks to help us set priorities and develop & refine our programs. We are required to do this to receive Community Investment Tax Credits. But it is also part of our DNA--it makes us effective as an organization.

We connect with our community in several ways:
  • The CDP's Board of Directors is a diverse group of 16 individuals representing each of the eight towns we serve. Board members include a micro-loan client, a resident of one of our affordable homes, business leaders, a Select Board member and members who work with our low to moderate income neighbors.
  • Our 60+ member Advisory Council serves as our brain trust and cheer leading squad! The Advisory Council, established in 2014, is a broad and diverse group of volunteers who serve on some of our committees and consult with CDP staff on ad-hoc projects. Most importantly, they broaden our reach across the Lower Cape, serve as our eyes and ears and help us better understand the affordable housing and economic development challenges we face.
  • We work collaboratively with other non-profits and belong to coalitions on the local, regional and state level working to address the needs of all members of our community.
  • And equally important are the CDP's donors and members who not only share their financial resources but also their passion, energy and creativity to help us create opportunities for people to live, work and thrive on the Lower Cape.

Safe, Stable & Affordable Housing

Changing Lives and Building Community 
Beth Wade

Beth Wade has been involved with local causes supporting affordable housing for over a decade. The first way she became engaged was through a telethon with the Friends of Chatham Affordable Housing. She said, "It was their first fundraiser and ended up being quite successful. I was completely and utterly immersed and I've been involved in supporting affordable housing in one way or another ever since."
Some of the ways she has been involved include as a former member of the CDP's Resource Development Committee, as well as a current member of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Housing and Asset Management Committee. Beth has also had a significant role with a local organization supporting individuals who have been homeless or near to homeless,   CHAMP Homes of Cape Cod.
Beth first started with CHAMP Homes as a volunteer, then became a Board Member and eventually Board President. In 2013 she joined the staff as the Director of Outreach and Marketing, and just over one year ago become the organization's Executive Director. CHAMP Homes provides a home for formerly homeless individuals, along with spiritual guidance and life skills training. They also advocate for neglected and marginalized people in our Cape Cod community.

Strong Local Businesses
Workshop Series an Important Resource for Growing Businesses
Our Grow Smart workshop series is helping to keep growing small businesses on track.  Working in a confidential setting with a team of experts, business owners are able to address current issues that challenge them on a day to day basis, like: understanding the financial health of the business; making more money; managing employees and professional services; setting up systems; balancing home and work. 

Devon Ruesch, of Devon's in Provincetown, participated in the workshop series la st fall. He said, "The workshop is a great tool for learning new skills and resources.  It also provides networking opportunities with other small business owners, making one feel less alone with the obstacles of running a business in the challenging Cape Cod market.  The speakers were super knowledgeable and engaging.  I would highly recommend the class."

Energy Saving Tips

During these colder winter months we thought it would be useful to provide some tips for you to make your home or business more energy efficient. And we didn't have to look far for some expert advice. Our own Director of Housing & Energy Efficiency Programs, Abigail Chapman, shared the following information:

If you're on the Cape, you want to start by calling the Cape Light Compact or visiting their website. It's the easiest, cheapest and most effective way to get started. Their vendor will perform a FREE energy audit on your home or business. Based on what they find, they will give you a proposal with suggestions of things you can do to make your home or business more energy efficient, including what it will cost. And if there are rebates or other incentives available, they'll note that too. 

Here are some of the areas of your home that will be focused on during an energy audit:

1) The "Building Envelope" - These are the parts of the house that separate you from the great outdoors. During an energy audit, a blower test will be done to determine where air might be leaking out of the house. Such a test will inform whether you need more insulation, any air sealing, and upgraded doors and/or windows.

2) Basement Mechanics - An energy audit will inform what level of efficiency your furnace or boiler is working at. If it's under 78% efficiency, it may be worth looking into a new one. There are now systems that work at 95% efficiency.

3) Around the House - The efficiency of your refrigerator will be tested, along with a recommendation for whether it's more cost effective to buy a new one. There will be an opportunity for all your light bulbs to be replaced (at no charge) with more energy efficient ones.  And free low flow shower heads and faucet aerators

Housing Rehabilitation Program Information Session
Need some help with home repairs? rehab pic
Join us for an information session at the Provincetown Council on Aging to learn about opportunities available through the Housing Rehabilitation Program. Funds are available to eligible residents to pay for critical home repairs, like: 
  • Roofing and siding 
  • Electrical
  • Heating and plumbing work
  • Structural repairs
  • Lead paint abatement
  • Energy efficiency upgrades

Annual Meeting
Join us to celebrate at our 25th Annual Meeting! This year we'll be at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster on Wednesday, April 14th 2016. The evening starts at 5:30 PM with light appetizers provided by Cosmos Catering and a cash bar. Our business meeting and awards ceremony begins at approximately 6:00 PM. We are delighted to present our annual awards to distinguished members of our community. And to introduce you to some of the people we've helped to grow a business or find a safe, affordable, year-round place to live.

Attention homeowners and landlords! Receive up to $35,000 for critical repairs to your home. Repairs include, but are not limited to roofing, heat, windows, siding, septic, lead paint abatement and energy efficiency upgrades.
