Unemployment Rates & Jobs by Industry

Tracking labor force and employment trends helps the City better understand supply and demand shifts as they relate to local workforce and land use needs to inform decision-making.

City of Thousand Oaks

According to the California Employment Development Department, the preliminary Thousand Oaks February 2023 unemployment rate is 3.5% (up from 2.6% in December 2022 revised figures).

The City has a total of 64,000 in the labor force with 61,700 who are employed. Labor force participation within the City is up about 1.6% compared to February 2022.

Ventura County

The California Labor Market report shows Ventura County’s preliminary February 2023 unemployment rate at 4.1% (down from a revised 3.5 in December 2022). Countywide labor force participation is up about 1.1% year-over-year. Statewide it's up about 1.3% year-over-year (not seasonally adjusted).

A total of 2,800 non-farm jobs were added in February 2023. However, a total of 1,000 jobs were lost; amounting to a net increase of 1,800 jobs over the previous month. Job gains consisted of: 800 Education and Health Services; 600 in Government; 500 in Leisure and Hospitality; 400 in Professional and Business Services; 300 in Construction; 100 in Manufacturing; and 100 in other Services. Job losses consisted of: 800 in Trade, Transportation, and Trade; 100 in Information; and 100 in Financial Activities.

The chart above illustrates year-over-year jobs by industry sector across the Ventura County region against a February 2020 benchmark. February 2023 data is a preliminary estimate. It shows estimated job gains in most industries compared to February 2022. (The Financial Activities and Information have dipped slightly year-over-year.) Across all sectors there are approximately 11,400 more jobs in February 2023 compared to February 2022. However, there are still about 1,000 fewer jobs compared to the February 2020 baseline.
