Dear Parish Pro-Life Coordinator,

It was wonderful to meet so many of you at our last Parish Pro-Life Coordinator meeting. I am in awe of the dedication and passion for pro-life that was so evident in our conversations. You inspire me!

October is Respect Life Month in the Catholic Church and plans are underway to commemorate the month with a host of opportunities to enhance awareness of and activism in our critical ministry.

But before we launch into October, there are some upcoming activities this month that your parishioners will definitely want to know about.

Mark your calendar for the 40 Days for Life Kickoff Rally on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at Gaston Christian Center to hear the latest pro-life news and top five ways to be a passionate and persuasive pro-life advocate! And if you haven't already, be sure to reserve your parish's day of prayer outside Southwestern abortion facility . The presence of your parish family can help save lives!! Check out for more details.

Last year, our counselors paired with prayer partners helped  396 women chose life for their babies! Please encourage anyone in your parish who feels called to this life-saving ministry to join us at our next training:  Sept. 7 in Spanish |   Sept. 28 in English.  Pre-registration is required at

The same woman who feels forced to consider abortion often needs someone to journey with her through her pregnancy as a mentor and friend. Project Gabriel is here to help answer that need. Please encourage your parishioners to consider learning more about how to be an Angel for a mother in need this Saturday, Sept. 7.  Registration information is available here. (Bilingual angels needed!)

Educating and forming our youth is critical to building a Culture of Life. CPLC's Education Ministry helps us do just that, but it takes an army to spread the truth!. Please share the next Speaker and Leader Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 14. More information here.

Please make an appointment with your pastor to walk through the packet and determine what resources would best suit your parish. USCCB resources for  Respect Life Month may also be found online here (and linked in the sidebar at left).

During Respect Life Month, we will celebrate the feast day of Blessed John Henry Newman, the 19th-century's most important English-speaking Roman Catholic theologian. He spent the first half of his life as an Anglican and the second half as a Roman Catholic. He was a priest, popular preacher, writer, and eminent theologian in both Churches.

Historical research made Newman suspect that the Roman Catholic Church was in closest continuity with the Church that Jesus established. In 1845, he was received into full communion as a Catholic. Two years later he was ordained a Catholic priest in Rome.

When Newman was named a cardinal in 1879, he took as his motto "Cor ad cor loquitur" -- "Heart speaks to heart." He passed away a little over a decade later. After his passing , a Newman Club for Catholic students began at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In time, his name was linked to ministry centers at many colleges and universities in the United States.

Let us be inspired by beatified Newman's zeal for the most vulnerable, and the incredible impact that the Catholic centers that bear his name have on youth across our country.

God Bless,

Hector Carrasco
