Greetings!

What is your favorite hidden treasure in the library? Maybe it's a favorite reading nook, puzzle table, or the new children's computers, a painting on the wall, or even a book you return to frequently on the shelves.

What's my favorite hidden treasure at Monterey Public Library? Well, thanks (I assume) for asking! It's a bit of an oddity, but we have a whale bone book. Ahh a book about whales and bones? Nope - the front and rear covers are pieces of whale vertebrae, and the interior has pressed sea grasses and antique photos of Custom House, 17 Mile Drive, San Carlos, and more. These books were sold to tourists about 125 years ago. This oddity reminds me of Monterey's short whaling history in the past and the prosperous whale watching that happens today. The whale vertebrae is a tangible connection to the old whalebone sidewalks (you can still see a few of these outside the Old Whaling Station) and how our Monterey story continues to evolve.

If you still haven't found your own hidden treasure at the library, join us on September 21st for a Faerie Garden craft to make your own! Or let us know what your favorite hidden treasure is in the library.

Warmly~

Brian
