Greetings!

School is back in session for most of the schools here in Monterey. We wish all of you a productive year full of imagination, wonder, and learning.

The library looks forward to serving students of all ages. Our eResources have a number of items from Gale that will help your students succeed in their research projects. Content related to Science, History, Archives, and more are available from your home! If you are looking for more reading resources, download the Libby, CloudLibrary, and Palace apps for expanded library content.

For our older students, we've added study pods in the library. These booths allow the library a semi-private space for virtual meetings or study sessions. The pods were entirely grant funded and we are excited to expand our space offerings. In addition, we've updated all of our tables & chairs inside the library for group work. Take a look!

I look forward to continuing to support an environment that celebrates learning, education, growth, and independent thought. The library will continue to be an evolving organization, and I'm intrigued by the 5 Laws of Library Science by S. R. Ranganathan (1931)

  1. Books are for use : the library needs to be open, and materials need to be available for the user.
  2. Every Reader Their Book : the library serves a wide audience. Not every book is for every person! Let the user choose.
  3. Every Books Its Reader : books were meant to tell a story or reach an audience. Books have value to the user.
  4. Save the Time of the Reader : libraries should organize their content well, improve services, and respect that your time is valuable.
  5. The Library is a Growing Organism : the library and our processes should continue to evolve with the world around us.

Just remember - as a learning organization, the library is also "back in school" and loves learning from you : our community.

Warmly~

Brian

WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR SIZE

OF JIGSAW PUZZLES?

If you guessed 1000 pieces, you are right!

In the 18th century, jigsaw puzzles were created by painting an image directly onto a slab of wood. Jigsaw puzzles were actually named after the tool, the jigsaw, a.k.a. fretsaw or scrollsaw. Join us for a jigsaw puzzle exchange - bring one, take one.

MISSING ZIP BOOKS?

THEY ARE BACK! We are so excited to offer zip book orders again!

Funded through the State of California and administered by the

California State Library, zip books allow the Library to purchase books or books-on-cd via Amazon.com and have them shipped directly to your home.

Information about the zip book program:

  • You may request up to one zip book per month until funds run out. To request a new item, you must return your current zip book.

  • The title cannot be already owned by Monterey Public Library.

  • The title must be available and fulfilled through Amazon.com for less than $50 (no pre-orders and no 3rd party sellers).

  • You must have a Monterey Public Library or

Pacific Grove Public Library card in good standing.

  • Your mailing address must be current and match the contact information in your library card account.

  • Requests for books in other languages, books on CD, or Playaways are welcome if they are available from amazon. Out of print books may be requested if they meet the criteria. DVDs, eBooks, and used books are not available through the zip book program.

Staff will review requests within one week. If your zip book is approved,

the order will be placed with Amazon and the item will be shipped

to your home. We will email you when the order is placed

or if we need to follow up on your request.

The zip book will then appear as an item checked out to your library account. Zip books are due six weeks from the order date.
