Greetings!
Yes, that's right - the Library is now open Mondays from 2-6pm. Our goal was to expand access to the library, and Monday afternoons were ideal for serving the youth looking for a safe place to study, gather, read, or wait for a ride after school. We look forward to seeing you and serving you. It's fulfilling to be able to expand access to our library!
When I was in my teens, I had to start submitting typed reports...but we didn't have a computer at home. Clunk, clunk, clunk went my grandfathers typewriter. I borrowed the 1920's portable (heavy!) typewriter from my mom. The keys made sure you typed with intent. The reel made sure to jam just before you wrote your last sentence. When you made a mistake you literally "x" it out, and you couldn't rearrange your paragraphs without scissors and glue. Sometimes a letter wouldn't work...and I felt envious of my friends with the resources needed to finish the work.
My reason for sharing this is that the library can be a resource for students of all ages to access computers, printers, online resources, and other tools to help complete their projects. The California State Library will be ending the statewide access to HelpNow! online homework help & tutoring, but we will be adding this service back to our library next month to support our students.
I worked with Teens at a library in the Bay Area several years ago. I learned then to succeed that you have to:
- Have your doors open
- Have an open heart
- Provide resources that are easy to use and access
- Have fun!
- Allow a bit of noise
- Think back to when you were a teen. What would have helped you succeed then?
The Monterey Public Library looks forward to continuing to expand our resources and services for all - and - opening our doors once again on Mondays.
Warmly~
Brian
