Greetings!
Volunteer appreciation week is coming soon! I want to thank all of the volunteers who contributed over 4,000 hours to the library this past year - wow! Books getting on the shelves, mending, processing, digitizing collections, assisting with programs, working on the Bookmobile, grabbing books for your requests and so much more!! The work they do keeps the library moving and grooving. We truly would not be the same library without you. Our volunteers show why Monterey is a special community - folks are genuinely interested in volunteering their time, money, and energy towards a community resource.
In the spirit of volunteer week, I asked trivia champion Sam Buttrey to write a piece about an exciting special event coming to the library soon ~ Sam is volunteering his time, knowledge, candor, and humor to support our library.
Warmly~
Brian
From Sam: On Sunday, June 9th, the Monterey Public Library Friends and Foundation will be hosting a special event: "Trivia Night with Jeopardy! Master Sam Buttrey." I'm grateful that Director Edwards has asked us to contribute a note to his column. I have been lucky enough to be a TV trivia champion, and my wife Elinda has worked at the library for many years. Between us we know that the library provides information -- and not just for trivia. Through books (including e-books), magazines, DVDs and other resources, Monterey Public Library provides the resources that help individuals access not just facts, but knowledge, insight, and materials for the soul. All manner of things people want and need -- biographies, novels, poetry, audiobooks, database access, poetry, even tax forms -- can be found at the library. MPL is a very important part of our lives, and we hope you'll join us as a contestant or observe at what is sure to be an exciting and fun night full of spirited competition, Q&A and a lot of fun! Register here!

JOURNEY THROUGH THE BANDIAGARA ESCARPMENT OF MALI
|
|
is back with his “Before They Vanish” travelogue series.
On the map for this program is a fascinating journey through the Bandiagara Escarpment of Mali in West Africa and exploration of the Dogan people.
One of the most ancient societies, the Dogans are known as master wood carvers, and believe they originated on a distant star and
traveled to earth as aquatic creatures.
