Greetings!
National Library Week has been celebrated annually on the 2nd week of April by the American Library Association since 1958. Originally it was a way to promote public libraries and the goals of:
"encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time" and "improving incomes and health" and "developing strong and healthy family life."
This year the American Library Association set the theme of "Ready, Set, Library!"; but as with many themes or taglines I have a hard time resonating with the message. Ready, Set, Library...does that mean we are racing somewhere? Am I supposed to say "Ready, Set, Library!" instead of "good morning!" when opening the library doors? Instead, I hope you find your own way to celebrate your library. Whether that is downloading an eBook, reading a newspaper, saying hello to awesome library staff, getting a Discover & Go Museum pass, or finding the perfect book in the stacks - share your joy of the library with a friend, neighbor, or colleague. Tell them what the library means to you and ask them to get a library card and fill out our strategic plan survey. Celebrate National Library Week by experiencing your own library joy.
We have a packed list of programs below but I wanted to highlight an event we are holding at the Stanton Center on April 15th at 5:30pm. Join us for the free film screening of Tiananmen Mission telling first hand accounts of student leaders in 1989 at Tiananmen Square. Following the film screening there will be a tea time discussion. Join us!
Warmly~
Brian
