Gifted Games Celebrate Inclusion

The 19th annual Gifted Games were held at Gilroy High School on Friday, May 3, with nearly 60 Hollister High School students and more than 20 peers attending. HHS and Gilroy High take turns hosting the event, which originated through the HHS Life Skills program. Gifted Games is an Olympic-style friendly competition for students with disabilities. Students of all ages from San Benito County and Gilroy came together to cheer each other on, showcase their athletic skills, and promote inclusion. 

Baler Competes in CCS Para Swim

Baler Nessa Davis competed on the CCS Para team this past weekend. She PR’d in both of her events: the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. In the 50 freestyle, she dropped 13 seconds, ending with a time of 1:31.05. In the 100 freestyle, she dropped 20 seconds, ending with a time of 3:20.57. Freshman Wins Law Day Competition

Congratulations to Hollister High School freshman Sophia Rodriguez for being chosen as the grand overall winner and sophomore Armando Barragan III for being chosen as runner-up for the Superior Court of San Benito County's 2024 Law Day Competition! They were honored at a ceremony on Friday, May 3rd, being presented a scholarship and certificate. In announcing the award, the court's resource team shared with Sophia, "Your insightful words and thoughtful analysis have set you apart, showcasing your interpretation of 'Voices of Democracy.' This accomplishment not only reflects your academic prowess but also demonstrates your commitment to making a difference in the world. Keep up the fantastic work, and continue to let your voice be heard in shaping the future of justice and equality. You are a shining example of the bright potential of our future leaders. Congratulations once again on this well-deserved honor!" The resource team added that they were "very impressed by (Sophia's and Armando's) essays. They have a bright future ahead!"

Baler Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to the Baler Athletes of the Week: tennis player Shane Wilbur and lacrosse player Theodore Meredith. Tennis Coach Rick Espino said, "Shane is our team captain, played No. 1 singles, had a 7-3 record in league and has worked hard on his tennis skills to end up at the No. 1 singles spot."

Lacrosse Coach Brett Davis said, "Theo has been our biggest leader throughout the entire season. No matter the adversity or situation, Theo has done a magnificent job of keeping the team together and spirits high. Aside from being our leader scorer, team captain and on track to receive all-league honors, Theo has been our most dedicated player and leads by example on and off the field."

Speech Language Hearing Month

May is National Speech Language Hearing Month, and Hollister High School's speech-language pathologist (SLP) team is excited to celebrate it and raise awareness about the importance of communication and understanding in our school community. Boys Volleyball in CCS Playoffs

Baler boys volleyball has earned the No. 10 seed in the Central Coast Section Division 1 playoffs and will face seventh-seeded Cupertino at Los Altos High School tonight (Monday, May 6) at 6 p.m.

BLT Celebrates Spring on Campus

Hollister High School held its annual Spring BLT (Baler Lunch Time) in the main campus quad on Friday, May 3, during which campus clubs and organizations sold food and drinks to students as a fundraiser. The event also featured a "Soak-A-Senior" fundraiser, in which students could pay various prices to have water dumped on willing seniors: $1 for a cup; $3 for a small bucket; and $5 for a large bucket. Family Wellness Expo is May 14

Our community is invited to the Family Wellness Expo on Tuesday, May 14 at the Strada Verde Information Center in Hollister. Hollister High School Principal Kevin Medeiros, San Benito High School District Director of Student Support Services Emmanuel Nelson, and District Coordinator of Interventions Adrian Ramirez will be among the panelists from a variety of local organizations.

Carnival Tickets Went On Sale Today

Tickets for this year's Hollister High School Carnival, which will be held at Veterans Memorial Park May 10th-12th, are on sale as of Monday, May 6 at the Student Payment Center in the high school's ASB Building on Nash Road. A "pay one price" ticket is $28 cash-only and redeemable for one day of unlimited rides. Any non-students visiting campus to purchase tickets need to first check in and receive a visitor's pass in the front office in the administration building at 1220 Monterey St. The Student Payment Center hours are indicated on the flyer.

Migrant Ed Program Meeting Focuses on Planned Second High School

The San Benito High School District and Hollister High School's Migrant Education Program will host a bilingual Parent Advisory Council and District English Language Advisory Committee meeting on Thursday, May 9 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. to gather input and feedback regarding the planned second high school in the district. The event will include dinner, child care and raffle prizes. Attendees are asked to RSVP to Elizabeth Martinez at emartinez@sbhsd.k12.ca.us or by phone at 831-637-5831, ext. 1702.
