PAC Meeting - Tomorrow, September 17 - Meet with Candidates
By Dustin Steiner, Vice President Government & Industry Relations
The election is just (gasp!) 50 days away. AGC’s Government Relations (GR) and Political Action Committees (PAC) have been actively hearing about local ballot measures and interviewing candidates for office. Tomorrow, your PAC will meet with five additional candidates seeking election this November. Join us as we meet with Jeff Fox running for Vista City Council, Danielle LeBlang who is seeking a seat on the San Marcos City Council, Councilman Steve Goble running for re-election in El Cajon, Lily Schworm for Cajon Valley Union School District, and Matt Gunderson, who is running for Congress.
The PAC will also be making spending decisions in multiple candidate races and discussing support for recently endorsed ballot measures in Chula Vista and San Marcos, as well as school bonds in Cajon Valley, Encinitas, and San Marcos school districts.
Please note that to be as accessible as possible to our membership, the location of the meeting has been changed to the offices of AGC Member - Finch, Thornton & Baird.

Doug Barnhart Named ‘2024 Nice Guy of the Year’
AGC’s own Doug Barnhart of Barnhart-Reese Construction will be inducted as the 2024 Nice Guy of the Year on October 12, marking the 44th year of the charitable foundation’s gala awards.
The San Diego Nice Guys, a 501(c)3 organization that has been operating in San Diego since 1979, is known for helping families by “offering a hand up, not a handout.”
Barnhart has been chosen for his active involvement in the community, namely for his participation as current chair of the County of San Diego’s Planning Commission, past chair of the California Contractors State License Board, former commissioner of the California Uniform Public Construction Cost Accounting Commission, former executive board member of the Regional San Diego Chamber of Commerce, former President of the San Diego International Sports Council, and past Chair of the Qualcomm Stadium Board. He also served on the San Diego Super Bowl Host Committee and has been a member of the Del Mar Fair Board.
As an active member of our association and past national president of AGC (2008), Barnhart is a worthy recipient who deserves our support.
He joins the ranks with other notable past recipients:
- Steve Fisher – Legendary SDSU Basketball Coach
- Pete Seidler – Late Padres Owner
- Mike McKinnon – KUSI Station Founder/Owner
-
Douglas Manchester – Chairman of Manchester Financial Group and Past Owner of San Diego Union-Tribune
- Ted Rossin – CEO/President of Rossin Steel and Past AGC San Diego President
- Conrad Prebys – San Diego Developer and Philanthropist
The San Diego Nice Guys will host the awards reception, dinner, and program, starting at 6 P.M. at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina. Atomic Groove will provide live entertainment at this black-tie optional event.
All proceeds will benefit San Diegans in need of that “hand up.” There are still tickets (individual and group starting at $375), as well as program ad sponsorships, available. More information can be found here.

Prioritize Construction Suicide Prevention: Check Out These Resources!
While the industry spent this past week raising awareness about the higher-than-average number of suicides within the construction industry, this month is National Suicide Prevention Month, so there’s no time like the present to check out industry resources.
To help our member companies become more comfortable having conversations about mental health, please check out the Construction Suicide Prevention Week Resource Library here.
Together, we can save lives.

Help us Give Thanks to our Military Families
Join AGC San Diego’s Build & Serve Charitable Alliance in helping Support the Enlisted Project (STEP) with its Thanksgiving Dinner Program. Each year, STEP donates supplies to make a turkey dinner with all the fixings for local military families facing financial hardships. AGC is collecting non-perishable Thanksgiving dinner items to support this effort.
We ask that your office set up a collection box for the requested items below, and then deliver them to one of our five locations by November 1. Together, we can ensure that military families enjoy a memorable Thanksgiving holiday.
