Taxes, Taxes, Everywhere

By Dustin Steiner, Vice President Government & Industry Relations

In his 1789 letter to Jean-Baptiste Le Roy, Benjamin Franklin famously penned “Our new Constitution is now established and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Well, in 2024, the taxman cometh! In San Diego County, we have several jurisdictions, from the State of California to the County of San Diego to multiple cities and school districts going to the voters with their hands out.

Here at the AGC, we like to support infrastructure investment and your Board of Directors is on the record in favor of the countywide transportation measure Let’s Go, San Diego! (now officially Measure G) In addition to local sales taxes in Escondido, Oceanside, and Santee.

As we hurtle toward Election Day 2024 (just 71 shopping days left!), your Government Relations and Political Action Committees are busy analyzing ballot measures and interviewing candidates. On September 4, the Government Relations Committee will hear from campaigns for sales tax measures in Chula Vista and San Marcos. We will also review school bond measures for Cajon Valley, Encinitas, and San Marcos. Is there a ballot measure you’re watching or hoping to learn more about? Let me know by clicking the RSVP link below. I hope you will join us!
