Seth Kahan on Leadership // Monday Morning Mojo
Facing Off
Five days ago I set up a facebook site, facebook.com/GettingInnovationRight. I spent a nominal amount (just about $50 so far) to advertise my page to people 18 and older in the US, UK, India, Brazil, China, and UAE. I limited my appearance to those people who have already expressed an interest in #business, #leadership, #strategy, and #innovation. So far I have over 1,100 "likes."

I have posted videos, short excerpts from my upcoming book (Getting Innovation Right), resources others have shared with me on innovation, the Table of Contents from my upcoming book, and excerpts from my last book (a business bestseller, Getting Change Right). Because Facebook tracks every post, when it is displayed and clicked upon, I can easily see which of these is getting play.

Facebook offers four interesting attributes for each post along with metrics. It is possible to sort on each of these so you can quickly get an idea of which posts are getting traction. The four categories currently offered are:
Reach - presumably these are the number of people who saw my ad because it was displayed on their screen while they were looking at it.

Engaged Users - this means that they clicked on my post in one way or another

Talking About This - this is the number of times someone makes a comment, shares my post, or responds to a question or poll - Facebook calls this "creating a story."

Virality - this is a percentage allocated to each of my posts based on based on the number of people who have created a story divided by the number who have seen it.

Facebook is making it very easy to create business pages, advertise them to specific audiences, and track which posts are getting the most play - instant feedback. A powerful engagement tool that can be evaluated for its effectiveness in realtime.

Further it provides full integration with Twitter and many other applications. I have set my tweets go directly to my Facebook page, as new posts.

We are seeing an unprecedented ease of use when it comes to social media. They are easy to hook together, inexpensive to experiment with, and capable of reaching literally millions of people.

According to Inside Facebook - a source of news and analysis on Facebook’s global growth, corporate developments, and product innovations - "Facebook now has more than 125 billion friend connections between its 901 million monthly active users."  With  almost 7 billion people on the planet, that  is 12% of  our global population. And Facebook has many of them cataloged by region and interest.

Increases in knowledge generally come as a result of increases in connectivity. And Facebook is not the only large-scale connection tools. Should be interesting times ahead.
