Cinco de Mayo Celebration

From Robin Lockwood

The Hospitality Committee would like to thank everyone who helped to make our Cinco De Mayo event on May 5th a huge success. We had over 90 attendees, and the fabulous food you all brought was over the top! Everything was so delicious and appreciated! It was a wonderful way to end our 2022-23 "Season".  Weather willing, there may be a 4th of July celebration, so keep your eyes on the MMM.

The EE community has been such a big support of our monthly events, and we are all so grateful for your participation, support and positive feedback. Your attendance makes every event so much fun!

We look forward to seeing you again in the fall!

Churro Cheesecake

From Deb Ries

Several folks asked for this delicious Churro Cheesecake recipe that Deb brought to the Cinco de Mayo party. Delicious! Thanks for sharing, Deb!

Ingredients

•1/2 cup sugar

•2 Tbsp ground cinnamon

•2 8 oz packages cream cheese, softened

•1/2 cup sugar

•1 egg

•1 tsp vanilla

•2 (8 oz) cans Pillsbury crescent dinner rolls

Instructions

  1. Combine 1/2 cup sugar and 2 Tbsp cinnamon in a small bowl. Set aside.
  2. eat the cream cheese till smooth. Add the sugar, egg, and vanilla and beat till smooth and creamy. Set aside.
  3. Spray a 9x13" pan with non-stick spray, then sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly in the bottom of the pan.
  4. Unroll one can of dough onto a lightly floured piece of waxed paper and press all the seams together. Carefully lift into the pan on top of the cinnamon sugar. Press to the edges of the pan.
  5. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the dough. Unroll the second can of dough and roll it out the same way as the first one. Place it on top of the filling.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar on top of the dough. Bake at 350° for about 30 minutes or until light brown.

Note: This recipe will be added to the Recipes on the EE website.

From Don Hartje

Have you seen Hercules, the huge Saguaro cactus in the desert adjacent to Esperanza Estates (west end)? Check out this masterful video from Joe Jackson, photographer, and Tom Aigner, narrator. Joe's video is excellent and Tom gives detailed and accurate directions for finding Hercules. You can watch it on YouTube, "Hunting For Hercules." We have this magnificent Saguaro right here...next to Esperanza Estates!

Note: We'll post this video on the EE website.

Sahuarita Food Bank

From Linda Sielken, 908 240-1887

The Sahuarita Food Bank on La Canada (17750 S La Canada) is in desperate need of diapers and feminine sanitary products. You can drop your items off at the food bank and if they’re closed there is a bin by the front door. You can also drop your items off at my house (143 S Circulo Napa) and I will drop them off for you, or if you would like to contribute money, I will shop for you.

Thank you!

Mobile Payment Apps Can Send Your Money In The Wrong Direction

Source: Green Valley Sheriff's Auxillary Scam Squad, May 2, 2023

Sadly, technology scams continue to haunt us, and they are even getting trickier. While we get tired of hearing about them, it's wise to be informed, especially about those targeting seniors. Here is an update from our Green Valley Scam Squad.

Electronic payments to family, friends, contractors and others are becoming increasingly popular. They are convenient and quick. But they are also popular with scammers. Just because you see PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or Cash App on your phone doesn’t mean it’s the real deal.

Scammers have figured out how to text you with a cash payment request and make you think it’s legitimate. They’ll even provide the link to send the requested payment and personal information.

Here are some tips on avoiding these scams:

  1. Make sure you know who is sending the request. These peer-to-peer payment apps are not to be used to send money to strangers; they are for pre-arranged agreements with people you know.
  2. Use a credit card or actual cash for higher-risk situations. Some credit cards have fraud protection. And cash doesn’t come with personal information.
  3. Be wary of unsolicited texts or phone calls requesting a payment. They will be disguised as IRS, banks, law enforcement agencies – anything that sounds like you should act. But if the request is a surprise to you, it’s probably a scam.

If you do receive one of these requests, simply delete it. Don’t make the payment. If you accidently disclose personal financial information, immediately change your password for that app. In addition, set your app privacy setting to the most private option. This will at least minimize any personal information sent to a scammer.
