How many times have you gotten the opportunity to visit an OR...not under anesthesia? Our Leadership Huntington class got to suit up at Cabell Huntington Hospital during the December session and get a behind the scenes look at healthcare in our region!

We had an insightful day that began at St.Marys Center For Education, starting with Dr. Kevin Yingling, CEO of Marshall Health Network, on servant leadership. We had a panel discussion moderated by Lisa Chamberlin-Stump, Chief Strategy Officer, Marshall Health Network, on the future of our region's healthcare with Dr. Robert Hess, MD, FAAFP, Co-Founder & President of OVP Health; Tim Martin, COO, Cabell Huntington Hospital; Mark Morgan, COO, HIMG and VP Physician Services, Marshall Health Network; and Dr. David Gozal, MD, MBA, PhD (Hon), Dean, Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and VP for Health Affairs.

Dr. Rebecca Scites, Nursing Curriculum Coordinator, St. Mary's Center for Education, led a tour of the facility that included respiratory care and medical imaging. The class heard from Dr. Paul Smith, Chief Administrative Officer at Marshall Health Network on practical points of Leadership and Tenikka Phillips, Cabell Huntington Hospital Counseling Center, lead our group through Mindful Leadership.

The afternoon session included a tour of Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center, Hoops Family Children's Hospital, and the operating rooms. We wrapped up the day with furry friends, Cabell Huntington Hospital's therapy dogs, Macy, Sofie, and Isabella.

Congratulations to Ridge Kids Academy on their new third location, Ridge Kids Academy - Woodville campus!

Ridge Kids Academy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, state-licensed child development entity with three campuses; Barboursville, Collis, and Woodville, being the newest addition. RKA is a year-round childcare center that offers care for students from 6 weeks through 12 years old. RKA is also equipped with an educational preschool program and an extended educational program for school-age students.

The Woodville and Collis locations have partnered with Marshall Health Network and offer childcare services to their employees.

The Huntington Museum of Art has announced its holiday hours. HMA will be closed to the public on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Dec. 31, 2023, and Jan. 1, 2024.



There will be no Saturday KidsArt on Dec. 30. Saturday KidsArt will return on Jan. 6, 2024, from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday KidsArt is an art activity designed for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Admission to Saturday KidsArt is free because of the generous sponsorship of Hoops Family Children's Hospital.

David Gozal, M.D., M.B.A., Ph.D. (Hon), vice president of Health Affairs and dean of the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, was named to the 2023 list of Highly Cited Researchers™ list by Clarivate™.



Of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, Highly Cited Researchers are one in 1,000. Each researcher selected has authored multiple Highly Cited Papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for their field(s) and publication year in the Web of Science over the past decade.

The Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC) has added two instructors to its expanding career skills training programs.

Layden Mantle of Huntington has joined MAMC as advanced manufacturing industrial instructor. He is helping finalize curriculum for the new SMART (systems maintenance, automation and robotics technology) Program that MAMC will launch in fall 2024 in partnership with Mountwest Community and Technical College. Mantle will serve as an instructor for the new program, in which students will earn industry certifications and associate degrees.

He most recently worked as a field service engineer at Archaea Energy in Ashland, Ky. The Kentucky native previously served as an instrumentation technician at Valvoline. A graduate of Paul Blazer High School in Ashland, Mantle earned a degree in electrical technology from Ashland Community and Technical College.

A familiar face is returning to MAMC. Kurt Zabel of Huntington is the newest machinist technology instructor for MAMC’s Machinist Technology/CNC Program, also offered in partnership with Mountwest.

A 2021 graduate of the hands-on, nationally recognized program, Zabel earned his associate degree and multiple credentials from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) while he completed the MAMC program. Zabel most recently worked as a CNC machinist at FLSmidth in Winfield. Before that he worked at Level 1 Fasteners in Huntington. Zabel is a graduate of Huntington East High School.

Because of growing industry demand, MAMC has expanded its machinist and welding programs and is developing the SMART Program to meet the pressing needs of area manufacturers, said Derek Scarbro, MAMC director. Further expansion of MAMC’s industry-focused programs is expected in 2024.

Four members of Valley Health's Dentistry team attended the National Network for Oral Health Access Conference (NNOHA) in Denver, Colorado, in early November: Dr. Andrea Kelly, DDS, Dental Director; Dr. Daniel Brody, DMD; Dr. Vince Powell, DMD; and Ryan Brady, RDH, Dental Program Manager. This year's conference was entitled "Building a Culture of Resilience”.

Dr. Andrea Kelly, DDS, Dental Director at Valley Health, shared her experience attending the National Network for Oral Health Access Conference, stating, "I attended courses and particularly enjoyed the class on Silver Diamine and using Fugi glass Ionomer. This has allowed me to return this service to treat my patients and do more conservative dental restorations." Dr. Kelly's dedication to continuing education and adopting new techniques and treatments is a testament to Valley Health's commitment to providing the best possible care to their patients.

Dr. Brody has attended the NNOHA conference for more than 30 years. This year, he conducted a round table discussion on "Opioids and Pain Management" and moderated the "Teledentistry Symposium." Dr. Brody is excited to take what he learned into action, saying, "The Valley Health Dentistry team looks forward to implementing a relationship with WVU School of Dentistry to provide our patients with synchronous and asynchronous consults with dental specialists located at the dental school." 

Dr. Powell attended courses on treating patients with special needs, managing post-surgical complications, and advanced endodontics. Ryan Brady attended leadership and health center oversight seminars, which covered topics and skills that he plans to utilize in his new role as Dental Program Manager. 

The Marshall University Foundation has announced that Wes and Martha Richardson have pledged $50,000 in support of the new Brad D. Smith Center for Business and Innovation at Marshall University with Northwestern Mutual matching the gift for a combined $100,000.
