WOODSTOCK OPERA HOUSE SETS PRE-RENOVATION - OPEN HOUSE FOR A BEHIND-THE-SCENES TOUR

What: The Woodstock Opera House is extending an invitation to the community to go beyond the curtains and delve into the extensive renovations slated for the building this summer. Staff and volunteers will host a special Pre-Renovation Open House on Wednesday, May 29th, from 5 to 7 p.m., offering a unique opportunity to explore the property before embarking on its transformational journey.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO), the Woodstock Opera House has commenced significant improvements to enhance its offerings for patrons and performers. In August 2022, the City secured a Rebuild Illinois Grant totaling $2,964,553 for the Downtown

Square & Opera House Renovation Projects.

During the public open house, guests will have the exclusive opportunity to tour the building while hearing from knowledgeable volunteers and staff, who will share the Opera House's rich history and discuss its promising future. Attendees will get an insider's look at the renovation plans and learn more about the vision behind the

revitalization efforts. Concept drawings for the shop & Stage Left areas will also be showcased, offering a glimpse into potential future projects. Guests can enjoy a cash bar and connect with fellow community members and Opera House enthusiasts.

Following the tours, patrons are welcome to stay and celebrate the launch of Karaoke Wednesdays in Stage Left from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Located at 121 Van Buren Street on the historic Square, the Woodstock Opera House has been a cornerstone of artistic expression and community engagement for over a century. Join us for the 2024 GiGiFIT Acceptance Challenge! 

 What: What is the GiGiFIT Acceptance Challenge? It is a community effort to support individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

This family favorite event each year is coming back BIGGER and BETTER than ever! This year we MOVE in our 5K run, 1-Mile Inspiration Walk, and Dash for Down Syndrome along with our favorite field day games, FOAM machine, and inflatable race!

NEW THIS YEAR we are partnering with our friends at GiGi's Playhouse Deerfield and we have our friends at Phase Three Brewing Company providing a hard-earned beer at the end of the race! 

When: By joining us on June 15th, you're taking a powerful stance to help us raise awareness and funds for essential resources and educational programs. Time: 7:00am

Join the "Dam" Walk

What: Everyone is welcome to do the 2 mile walk starting at the McHenry Dam. Lots of shade and foliage along a wooded path that is mostly flat. We gather after to socialize and share water and granola bars. Bring a friend. Sponsored by Health & Wellness 101.

2024 Cicada Brood XIII Arrival and What You Need to Know

What: Cicada Emergence 2024 – What to Expect

Eastern United States is the only place in the world where periodical cicadas occur, and there are 15 broods, each with a specific emergence year and geographical location of emergence. In Illinois, there are members of 5 cicada broods. In 2024 we will see a remarkable natural phenomenon. There will be the emergence of the Northern Illinois Brood XIII, the Great Southern Brood XIX and a 2028 emergence group, the Mississippi Vally Brood XXIII, that may contain a small number of cicadas that emerge in 2024 called stragglers. They will be primarily in far southern Illinois.

When: Sometime in mid-May Northern Illinois will see the emergence of periodical cicadas which only happens once in 17 years. The cicada invasion generally lasts about 4 weeks, so by the end of June it will be all over. Cicadas prefer delicious trees like elm, chestnut, ash, maple, hawthorn, redbud, Oak, but fruit trees, ornamentals and shrubs are also at risk. They pose the largest threat to small, weak trees, shrubs and ornamentals. Cicadas do not eat plants and will do no harm to flowers and new leaves.

Where: The Northern brood will be emerging in the northern half of Illinois, but also in Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin and possibly Michigan. The Great Southern Brood will be emerging in the southern half of Illinois, but will also emerge in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. There may be a few places in central Illinois, around Springfield, where the two broods will be emerging in the same area. However, they aren’t expected to overlap to any great extent. This is the first time this has happened since 1803 and it won’t happen again until 2245.
