Game Day was a SMASHING Success - Thanks for Attending Affiliate Day Golf!

By Katie Hammock, Meetings & Events Director

With the Olympics and major sporting events coming to a close, it's only right that we have our own major version of Game Day at the 85th Annual AGC Affiliate Day Golf at the Singing Hills Golf Club at Sycuan this past Friday!

Over 300 golfers, exhibitors, sponsors, and committee members came to golf, gather, and galivant around our fantastical provisions and two golf courses at Sycuan. We have to first and foremost thank our title sponsors, Alliant Insurance Services and Moss Adams LLP

And we have to recognize and congratulate our winners:

We had Bloody Mary Bars (courtesy of Collins Plumbing, Hensel Phelps, Helix Electric, and Tower Glass), a fantastic Sunday golf bag tee prize and bratwursts lunch (courtesy of Finch, Thornton, & Baird LLP), Dilly's Ice Cream Truck (cool treats courtesy of FuturePlan and West Coast Group Benefits), and our scorecard sponsor (Milwaukee Tool)! We also had an amazing steak-chicken dinner buffet to close out the festivities.

As a tournament, we also recognize and appreciate a couple of our lasts in terms of committee leadership. This year marks the last year that our Committee Chair, Frank Gerberding from Apex Advertising, and AGC San Diego's own Rae Krushensky, our Vice President of Operations, will run this massive event. They've both contributed many years and many hours to this amazing event, and it truly wouldn't happen without them. So, we honor and thank them here. It won't be the same, but even so, we hope to see them on the course as golfers or distinguished guests next year. We look forward to the new leadership of current Co-Chair Michael Burrell, Volvo Construction Equipment and Services, in the years to come, especially after serving under the esteemed leadership of Frank and Rae.

We also want to again thank all our committee members for their hours of assistance in making sure this event ran smoothly (and ended early!). Committees continue to be the glue that holds us together, and for this event, it's no different.

This event also continues to support our workforce development and our partner programs in the industry, inclusive of SDSU. Special thanks to Thais Alves, Professor and AGC - Paul S. Roel Chair in Construction Engineering and Management, for her dedication to her program, and her students who showed up in force to help us set up and tear down the tournament.

See below for a special video (courtesy of Mike Furby, Marathon Construction Corporation) that showcases just one of the ways AGC and our member organizations (Marathon and RDO Equipment Co.) showed up for 62 SDSU students taking the Construction Methods course by hosting a field trip at our Lakeside office and adjacent member HQ facilities earlier this year.

The continued success of this program, the J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program, continues to be of the utmost importance so that we can truly continue to build together and grow the industry in San Diego.

We hope to see you all next year! (Or in a couple of months for Fall Golf!)

Construction Industry Needs Workers

By Mike McManus, Director of Engineering Construction & Industry Relations

According to the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), union membership has fallen since 1983. In 1983, union membership of the workforce was 20.1 percent and there were 17.7 million union workers. In 2023, the percentage of union workers in the workforce was 10.0 percent across all industries, and the number of union workers was 14.4 million.

The rate of union membership for government workers is 32.9 percent. For private sector workers, it is 6.0 percent. However, in the construction industry, 10.1 percent of workers are members of labor unions. In California across all sectors, the union membership is 15.1 percent.

Is the falling rate of union membership a good thing or a bad thing for the country? It depends on who you ask. According to Pew Research, there are very different views on this question, which depends on your political philosophy and age. For example, 71 percent of Republicans ages 65 and older say the decline of unions has been very or somewhat good for working people. However, only 40 percent of all adults under age 40 think the decline of the unions has been a good thing.

Sixty-nine percent of Democrats say that the decline in union membership has been bad for the country, while only 40 percent of Republicans say that the decline has been bad for the country.

While statistics and opinions vary, one thing is clear, skilled labor - whether organized or not - is on the decline and has been for some time. Could it be the large number of baby boomers are retiring at high rates, and not being replaced fast enough by younger workers? Or maybe it’s the loss of shop and other technical curricula in the high schools in favor of college-bound academics. Whatever the reason, some of the younger generation just do not seem to see working in the trades as a career path.

In the San Diego region, the proliferation of Project Labor Agreements (PLA) is here to stay for now. This fact will likely exacerbate the worker shortage situation for some agencies and companies who will shift to private, non-PLA work.

The question for the industry is how do we navigate this situation? More work than workers to staff projects is a good problem to have. But the crumbling infrastructure is also a real problem in this region and there is an opportunity for the industry to step up and fix it if we can overcome the shortage of skilled workers. Apprenticeship programs and outreach to high school and college-age students is a crucial step. The construction industry should be focused on growing our numbers. Workforce development is top of mind for most of our members and a major focus at AGC San Diego. We need your input. Get involved in a committee and help us reach the next generation of construction workers!
