What's Happening at Modo Yoga Squamish....
|
|
When we arrive at the end of a 30 Day Challenge, it is important to look back and reflect. At the beginning, we asked what your intention for the challenge was. Maybe it stayed the same, maybe it transformed, maybe it changed, maybe you forget what it was... Either way, over 30 days have gone by and your practice transpired. Whether you made it everyday or a couple times a week (or your name wasn't up there, but you were on your mat) -- the collective energy of the space vibrated powerfully. Having all of you in the studio is what keeps this space, this practice, alive! You all bring your unique selves to the mat to collectively breathe as one. How magical! Thank you for your dedication, your inspiring ways and for continuing to hold space for yourself and one another. We love it when you share with us how it felt for you - stop us, chat with us and share!

Taylor's journey with yoga began when she was a teenager looking for a new way to get active. It wasn't until she found the Modo community, however, that her practice truly began and she started to weave the threads of yoga into every part of her life. After graduating University with a degree in Biology, Taylor decided to take a leap of faith and become a yoga teacher. She saw it as the perfect way to give back to a community that had given her so much. Through her teaching, she hopes to give students the time and space to stop, breathe, and connect with what is truly important in life. Off the mat, you can find Taylor working as a high school teacher, in the kitchen cooking up some yummy vegan treats, or outside exploring the sights of BC.

Caitlin started doing Modo yoga 15 years ago and has worked as an Energy Exchange, then Membership Co-ordinator, and now she is the Studio Manager and a teacher at Modo Yoga East Vancouver. She loves showing up to her mat so that this practice can show her where she's at - physically, emotionally, and mentally. Yoga has given her a way to work through anxiety and depression and practicing helps her feel more calm and grounded. From her classes you can expect a balance of mindfulness, physical challenge, and attention to breath. She aims to provide a fun, supportive environment in which students can get curious about their bodies and minds.

Angela moved to Yellowknife after university to start her career and discovered yoga in this time. She found that it brought a sense of calm to her life. A couple of years later she found herself on a retreat with two Modo teachers from Montreal and she was hooked. She started taking classes at studios all over the country and no matter where she went she always felt like she was home. It is this sense of community and peace that she brings to her classes. She is looking forward to joining the Modo Squamish family and exploring Squamish for a couple of days.

Anne...
When Anne first started practicing yoga in 1999, the physical benefits kept her coming back. She loved the amazing workout and satisfying sweat, not to mention the sense of accomplishment she felt as her strength, flexibility and balance improved.
Today, yoga still connects her to her body, but in different ways. It allows her to slow down and breathe. The noise of her life recedes. She feels grounded and resilient. Everyday on her mat feels different - body, mind, and spirit. For her, there is always something new to learn or experience.
Her goal as a teacher is to help others find a sense of curiosity and learning. How do people's unique biologies and biographies shape how (and why!) they each practice? How can each person's yoga practice evolve in response to their changing needs, so that it can heal instead of harm?
Outside of the hot room, you'll often find her nerding out about anatomy, asking too many questions, cycling around Vancouver or happily jigsaw puzzling.
She and her husband, Todd, have studied with the Modo community for Level 1, Level 2, Flow and Fit. They have also studied yin with Bernie Clark and Joe Barnett, as well functional anatomy with Susi Hately and Ray Long. She thanks all of the people, places and perspectives that teach her every day.

Todd...
Todd puts it simply: yoga feels good.
Yoga is his exercise of choice, continually testing his body's strength and flexibility through different ranges of motion.
Yoga is his work of choice. It enables him to interact with a diverse community of really interesting people who ask great questions about how to customize yoga postures to fit their own unique bodies.
He is always learning from other people who practice yoga and hopes that they might learn from him too. He looks forward to seeing you on your mat real soon.
Off the mat, you can always check in with him about how the Edmonton Oilers are doing!
He and his wife, Anne, have studied with the Modo community for Level 1, Level 2, Flow and Fit. They have also studied yin with Bernie Clark and Joe Barnett, as well functional anatomy with Susi Hately and Ray Long.

We say goodbye to Amy Carr-Hilton, RMT -
~~~~~~ Here is a letter from Amy...
I write to say my heartfelt thank you to all who have smiled, said hello, practiced beside, or just sat peacefully in my presence at Moksha-now-Modo Yoga Squamish. It's you who makes the space whole and alive, and I'm grateful to have been part of that process with you.
Change is always a little bitter-sweet. Being there since opening day and seeing all the care that went into its conception has created a special place in my heart for the people, the place, and the practice that happens daily there. Moving my practice out of that very nurturing environment is not an easy change, I will miss you all.
Seeing Kristy and Troy work hard to create a space that is so deeply committed to improving the well-being of each person who walks into the studio, as well as the community it rests in and the planet as a whole, is inspiring. Seeing all their work coming to fruition day after day has been uplifting and encouraging for myself and my clients. A deep thank you to the two of you for welcoming me and taking a chance on a (then) stranger in sharing your space.
I'm not going far, just to a new clinic I've been working on, Eaglewind Health (eaglewindhealth.com) in downtown Squamish that is opening November 1st. You're all welcome to stop in anytime and check it out! I hope you find I've carried forward that calm, peaceful atmosphere and space for healing that you've experienced at Modo Yoga Squamish.
If you've been in to see me for massage therapy, you're welcome to continue booking with me for as long as you still feel it will be a benefit to your health. Many of you who have been in to see me for massage at Modo Yoga appreciate the benefits of a walk to and from your massage therapy appointments, and I know it will be a challenge for some to make the trek downtown. There will be a new therapist joining you at Modo Yoga soon, but in the meantime if you would like a referral to a registered massage therapist near you please don't hesitate to ask for my referral.
My greatest concern is for your health and I will work in any way I can to help you find the care you need, whether it's with me or someone else more suited to your needs.
If I don't see you at Eaglewind, I look forward to seeing you all around town, on the trails, and in the practice space!
Thank you all again and again,
Amy Carr-Hilton, RMT
The three muscles of the hamstring attach at the sitting bones of the pelvis and run down the back of the thigh. There are 2 hamstrings on the inner side of the back of the thigh and one on the outer side. Hamstrings are used for walking, running and jumping. Because the hamstrings run along the back of the knee you will often hear a teacher say to soften the knees so that the hamstring can relax, when we are stretching the hamstring. You may also hear the teacher say to draw the back of the leg towards the ceiling when we are strengthening the hamstring. When we engage the thigh muscles we relax the hamstrings. When we engage hamstrings we relax the fronts of the thighs. Give and take!
So, in your next class bring some awareness to your hamstrings in just some of the poses we practice at the studio - are you strengthening or stretching?:
