IFTA returns to go all electronic on August 1

Starting August 1, filing of all International Fuel Tax Agreement returns must be made electronically, using MoDOT Carrier Express.

STEP-BY-STEP VIDEO OF RETURN FILING

The three videos linked here show how to file IFTA returns through MoDOT Carrier Express.

The first two videos cover the steps beginning with log in to entering data to invoicing and payment. The third walks through the document upload process.

You can click on the links here or visit modot.org/IFTA to find the videos. If you are more comfortable reading through the steps, find written user guides also on the IFTA webpage.

FILING ONLINE IS EASY AND REDUCES ERRORS

Nearly 90% of those who file IFTA do so electronically. Many tell us it is the easiest of all the transactions they complete online.

In addition, the system uses the most current fuel tax information reported by each state and province. There's no need to seek the current fuel tax rates for each jurisdiction, nor must carriers calculate tax due or refunds owed. The system does it for you.

WE ARE STILL HERE

During work hours, MoDOT agents are available to assist IFTA licensees with accessing and completing fuel tax returns. In fact, we expect to provide better availability as we reduce the time we spend in data entry and move to a technical support role. And with fewer calculation errors, our Financial team can use time currently spent making corrections for your more pressing needs.

IFTA ROUNDING MESSAGE ADDRESSES DATA QUALITY, PROMOTES ACCURACY

When filing an IFTA tax return, a message about the mileage you report might appear. This year-old function activates as a reporting safeguard.

The “miles appear rounded, please verify” message appears when a significant number of jurisdiction mileage reports end with a zero or a five.

If the majority of entries end in zero or five, an explanation is required. MoDOT MCS reviews the comments, sometimes requiring additional documents, such as trip logs or mileage reconciliations. Auditors also see the explanation and supporting documents as part of their review.

This helps ensure that information shared on IFTA tax returns is accurate. Past audits reveal that tax returns with an excessive number of mileage reports ending with a zero or five rarely match receipts and reports for the period.

WORK WITH US IN WORK ZONES

Highway crews and contractors are already hard at work on repair, bridge work, striping and other projects.

Please work with us by obeying signs and instructions, minding your speed and driving with extra care around work zones. Your role will help us all get home safely.

OSOW TIPS - Stay on route

Last spring, travelers endured hours of delay due to incidents that occurred when an OSOW load driver continued traveling after missing a turn on their assigned route.

We remind carriers and drivers to review permits for accuracy. You must notify MoDOT MCS of any issues BEFORE movement commences.

Follow the prescribed route. If a driver misses a turn, STOP. Notify MoDOT MCS to issue a new permit with safe routing. Carriers whose drivers travel off the approved route can be suspended from permitting privileges or find them completely revoked.

During incidents that block a driver's path, such as a crash that closes a highway, an OSOW permitted driver cannot detour. They can pull off the highway to a safe place and wait for the incident to clear.

Blanket permit holders must verify the route they choose to travel can support the weight, width and height of their load. Use the MoDOT Traveler Information Map’s introductory and OSOW layers to verify the route is safe for travel on the date of travel.

MCS thanks the OSOW community, the vast majority of whom follow permit restrictions to the letter, for helping keep themselves, fellow travelers and Missouri's highway infrastructure safe.
