GREG DAVIS IS TIFT FARMER OF YEAR

Greg Davis was named the Tift County Farmer of the Year this week at the Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Appreciation Banquet sponsored by Lasseter Tractor.

Davis farms throughout the county with approximately 1,200 acres of cotton, 150 acres of peanuts, 30 acres of corn and 200 acres of watermelons. The son of Lola Davis and the late H.C. Davis, he grew up farming in Tift County.

"Greg was born with farming in his blood," said Brian Tankersley. "Greg puts millions of hours in farming; and if you have ever seen his fields, they speak for that. His wife has always made the comment that Greg is a perfectionist when it comes to farming and taking care of his crops."

He and his wife Kim have two children.

"This is a very big surprise but I am deeply honored," Davis said.

COACH CAMPBELL RETIRES AFTER 20 YEARS AT ABAC

Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's Fillies Softball Coach Donna Campbell will retire from coaching at the end the spring 2015 season.

Campbell, who enters her 20th season as Fillies softball coach, has been coaching for 30 seasons. Her teams have won seven state titles and four state runner-up titles. They have also made five national tournament appearances. In all, Campbell has had 26 winning seasons in her coaching career.

Twenty years ago, in her first year as a collegiate coach, her ABAC team went 44-12 and won the 1996 National Junior College Slowpitch Championship. She was named the National Junior College Athletic Association Slowpitch Coach of the Year for her success.

In 19 years of coaching fastpitch at ABAC, she has guided her teams to five Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association State titles (97, 98, 00, 01, and 02). Campbell was named GCAA's Fastpitch Coach of the Year in all five of those seasons. She also helped the Fillies bring home three State Runner Up finishes, one District C championship, and four top 16 NJCAA finishes competing in four National Tournaments.

In 2012, she was awarded the Easton Victory Club award for earning her 500th college career win. Campbell's ABAC coaching record is 562 wins and just 394 losses. She has compiled a career record of 727 wins and 472 losses.

Although she is retiring her glove and duties as Fillies coach, Campbell will continue at ABAC as a full-time faculty member in the School of Human Sciences.

LEROY ROGERS SENIOR CENTER EXPANDING

More amenities and more space will be the result of a renovation and expansion of the Leroy Rogers Senior Center, which officially began with a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday.

City officials joined staff and volunteers with the Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the event. The City of Tifton received a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant for the project to provide matching and leverage funds. The matching funds come from SPLOST revenues. The expansion will include a larger assembly room, other additional space for senior activities, a conference room, additional parking and drainage improvements.
