Palm Beach County recently broke ground on its second Homeless Resource Center (HRC2) on Lake Worth Road in Palm Springs.
The 20,000-square-foot center, due to open in 14 months, will feature over 70 beds, a sheriff substation, health care services, laundry, pantry and community room.
Additionally, HRC2 will offer supportive services including housing placement and job training to restore individuals to self-sufficiency.
The county currently has other homeless resource facilities including the Philip D. Lewis Homeless Resource Center, Belle Glade Intake Center, Lake Village at the Glades and Lewis Center Annex (South Florida Fairgrounds). Additionally, groundbreakings will soon take place for 17 cottage homes for homeless families.
Addressing our homeless population remains a top priority for the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners.

In a tragic car accident on State Road 7 in Delray Beach, a juvenile driving over 150 mph rear-ended a vehicle killing its six occupants.
In response, Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is conducting significant speed and aggressive driving enforcement across Palm Beach County.
Speeding endangers the life of the speeder and all of the people on the road around them. It significantly reduces a driver's ability to steer safely around another vehicle, a hazardous object or unexpected curve.
Protect yourself and those around you by respecting the speed limit, especially in school zones and residential neighborhoods.
Anything we can do to avoid a tragedy like this and get drivers to slow down is a small step in the right direction; unfortunately, we can never undo the horrible results accidents such as this one cause.

Last week, Palm Beach County hosted the Governor's Hurricane Conference at the convention center in West Palm Beach. The event focused on hurricane planning, preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation.
Colorado State University's hurricane forecast projected 19 named storms, with nine of those storms predicted as major hurricanes.
While county emergency officials are prepared, we urge everyone to take the necessary steps in preparing for a potential active hurricane season.
Emergency officials advise that residents should be prepared to survive on their own for at least 72 hours. Supplies sell out fast once a storm has been forecast, so it is imperative to plan ahead.

Special Spaces is a local nonprofit dedicated to creating dream bedrooms for children ages 2-19 in south Palm Beach County who have cancer.
Through the child's imagination and at no cost to the family, volunteers transform the child's existing bedroom into a magical place of hope, a place not only to sleep but also to recover and spend time away from the challenges of their illness. Most importantly, it is a space where they can just be a kid.
The Boca Raton chapter started in 2016 and will be transforming its 38th bedroom in June.

In 1867, a Beach-walker, or Barefoot Mailman, would carry mail on foot from Jupiter to Miami. The six-day, round trip covered 136 miles, 80 on foot plus 56 in small boats. Over a year, a Barefoot Mailman walked over 7,000 miles.
One of the Barefoot Mailmen, James Edward Hamilton, died in the line of duty. Hamilton drowned or was attacked by alligators when he tried to swim across the inlet.
A panel of murals depicting Barefoot Mailman James Hamilton is located in the lobby of the U.S. Post Office on 3200 Summit Boulevard in West Palm Beach.
