Congress Pushes Forward with Bill to Squash 2022 Rosemont Decision!

The Mining Regulatory Clarity Act passed the House with bipartisan support and awaits approval in the Senate.

Western legislators are leading the effort to pass the Mining Regulatory Clarity Act. with the explicit goal of erasing the new legal precedent the 2022 Rosemont decision created.

In the Rosemont decision, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with conservation groups, ruling that the federal government was wrong to assume the Rosemont Copper Company, mining in the Santa Rita mountains in southern Arizona, had a right to dump mining waste on federal land where the company could prove no valid mineral claim.

This bill, if passed, will among other things, allow mining companies to dig pits and roads, and install mining equipment and infrastructure on public lands before proving that any critical minerals exist at those proposed sites.

The Living Desert Alliance encourages you to review the act then contact Rep. Juan Ciscomani, who voted in support of the Bill, as well as Sen. Justine Wadsack, and Sen. Priya Sundareshan to voice your opposition.

Bobcats in Tucson

Research Project

A Study of Bobcats Along the Urban/Wildlands Interface

Bobcats are an iconic wildlife species in the southwest. They have generally adapted to utilizing the urban/wildlands interface successfully. However, little is known about the specifics of this behavior and the natural history components of the adaptations.

That’s where the Bob Cats in Tucson comes in. They are here to change public perceptions of the bobcat’s presence and to provide a foundation for support of management actions and watchable wildlife viewing opportunities.

Using habitat selection and data from radio collared bobcats and utilizing urban and adjacent wildland habitats of Tucson Mountain Park, and Saguaro National Park, they develop strategies and outreach materials to reduce the risk of conflict, in order to increase homeowner, neighborhood, city and statewide appreciation of bobcats as watchable wildlife, and add to the scientific knowledge of urban bobcats.

This effort helps Keep our Desert and Community Livable and Thriving as

we come to understand and coexist with another natural inhabitant

of the Sonoran Desert.
