David allowed conflict among some of his sons to plunge his family into tragedy. His oldest son, Amnon, rapes and then shames his half-sister, Tamar (2 Samuel 13:1-19). Tamar's full-brother, Absalom, hates Amnon for that crime but does not speak to him about it. David knows of the matter but decides to ignore the situation (2 Sam. 13:21).
Like David, we have all failed as parents through our inaction and sometimes hurtful words. Despite his failings, he began to dream about building a Temple to honour the Lord and have a place of worship for the people. God told David that he could not build the temple himself because of the blood on his hands (I Chron. 28:3). David began to impart and share that dream with his son, who would become king and fulfill the dream of his father (I Chron. 28:6-7).
