LAFCU, community partners provide hundreds of free backpacks, supplies for local kids
Back-to-School Extravaganza event prepares over 225 kids for new school year
| |
Over 225 local children in grades K-12 received free backpacks and school supplies as part of LAFCU’s second annual Back-to-School Extravaganza event at The Village Lansing. The number of backpacks handed out in 2023 was more than double last year’s count.
“We understand the financial stress parents and caregivers are under, particularly due to inflation and the current cost of living,” said Shelia Scott, LAFCU's community financial education & business development officer. “This annual event aims to unite the entire community to help support local families and make things easier and less stressful. From those who graciously donate supplies to organizations partnering together to the volunteers who show up for the event, we all have the same goal: to alleviate some of that financial burden for the adults and provide tools to help kids thrive during a new school year.”
LAFCU, The Village Lansing and TWO MEN AND A TRUCK continue to unite as a force for good by organizing the annual Back-to-School Extravaganza event and engaging local community members and other businesses to donate back-to-school supplies ranging from pencils and notebooks to personal hygiene products like toothpaste and shampoo. Donations were asked to be dropped off at LAFCU’s 10 mid-Michigan branches. “Now in its second year, the Back-to-School Extravaganza has already positively impacted over 325 local schoolchildren,” Scott said.

We will continue to lean into this philosophy by generating financial well-being for all and cultivating legacy-defining moments for those we serve!” Michigan Saves is a non-profit organization that provides a clean energy lending program that assists homeowners with finding an authorized contractor, an online application for financing, and connecting with a qualified lender. CASA volunteers advocating for over 160 children during a dark time in their lives. A time when it can be difficult to thrive, move forward, or turn on the light. That's where our CASA volunteers come in. With training and awareness of each child's unique needs, they ignite a spark that helps children find the light within – so they can shine!
What would happen in our community if every child had a CASA volunteer? Imagine how bright the future could be…
When you support CASA, you ensure a consistent adult in a child's life. Someone who is listening, building their resiliency, advocating for their needs, and making their voice heard. During 2023 alone, CASA volunteers ensured that nine children had increased self-esteem, 22 had improved education or school attendance, 10 received therapeutic services, and eight received culturally appropriate services.
Your donation helps shine a light on a child's unique needs through the CASA volunteer's advocacy. You are supporting a volunteer who can advocate for a sibling group to enroll in school, start therapy, or get translation services for a child whose medical needs weren't being addressed due to a language barrier.
Every child deserves a chance at a brighter future, and today, your gift can provide that with double the impact. YOU can help a child shine by supporting CASA. Thanks to Francis and Tammy Pytlowany, and The Douglas A. & Margaret E. Decamp Foundation who have each generously offered to match donations one-to-one up to $5,000.00 for a total match of $10,000.00.
Your $25.00 donation can become $50.00, $50.00 becomes $100.00, and $625.00 becomes $1,250.00, ensuring one child has a CASA for a whole year!
Your donation today will keep the dream of a brighter future alive, and eight children will receive a CASA volunteer if we meet our match donor. Thank you for believing in a future where every child has a chance to shine.

Visit Santa in his woodland workshop on the Hayhoe Riverwalk Trail. You and your children will walk about half a mile, scouting out hidden elves, and then back. Dress appropriately. The trail is paved but unplowed, if you prefer wagons or strollers.
Park on East Street near the cemetery entrance and walk about a half mile (20 minutes) to Santa. The community garden entrance will be closed this year.
Be sure to arrive no later than 2:30 to make it to Santa before he closes his woodland shop. This event is FREE and sponsored by New Wine People.
