Meet Your Neighbors

Historian, artist, and environmentalist Scott “Doc” Varn is the founder of Preserving A Picturesque America (PAPA), a non-profit aimed towards preserving and restoring natural landmarks across the country. With a profound respect for the wilderness, Scott has dedicated his life to educating people on the importance of slowing down, taking a step back, and revering the grandeur of mother nature.

Upon meeting Scott, the fiery passion he holds for his work paired with his anything-is-possible attitude led us to believe he’d been on a journey to fulfill this destiny since the day he was born. On the contrary, he stumbled upon his life's calling by a stroke of luck, or perhaps fate.

(CAPTION: Picturesque America was started in the mid-1800s and continues to influence artists today.)

The creation of PAPA was the product of a snowball-like chain of events that all started when Scott bought a print engraving of Lover’s Leap, an overlook near Hot Springs, North Carolina. It happened to be from Picturesque America, a two-volume set of books originally published in 1872 that described and illustrated the scenery of America. On the back of the engraving were eight words that would change the trajectory of his life: “what's going to become of these unspoiled places?” At that moment, Scott knew it was his duty to find out. “That page was talking to me, and that calling led me to discover, and fall in love with, Picturesque America,” Scott said. “It was like peeling an onion and always finding more.”

Learning about PAPA through Scott was a powerful reminder of what it means to truly be rooted in a cause, and how many people have lost touch with the beauty and introspection their surroundings have to offer them. “With so many digital shortcuts available for art it is easy to get caught up in AI and photos on social media,” Scott said. But the true colors of nature in real life shine through in PAPA’s gallery. Featured artists spend countless hours observing and critiquing a landscape, in turn creating an aura that speaks to how the artist interpreted the scenery that day. Whether it’s the wind whipping through the emerald leaves of a tree or the warmth of the sun dancing on a mountaintop, each piece comes to life with a distinct personality that is almost tangible.

(CAPTION: Scott works away at his block carving using the natural light in the gallery. For him, a perfect Sunday afternoon is spent right here, listening to WNCW and sipping a hot cup of tea from Mewdlics.)

Scott showed us a live oak carving he’s working on, a project that will take him more than 300 hours to finish. While the process is tedious, Scott has found it to be more rhythmic and therapeutic rather than monotonous. “It's a meditation and a mantra,” he said. “It's when your mind gets an opportunity to be free.” Each pass his knife makes through the wood holds incredible importance, just as each brushstroke on a canvas is made with certain intentions, whether the artist is aware of them or not. Over time, these meticulous movements join harmoniously to create a finished product unlike any other; unique by design. Some people may never see these places in person, which, according to Scott, is why it is so important that they create a connection with the art. “You can’t appreciate something you don't understand,” he said. “The purpose of PAPA is to emphasize the value of these places that are assumed to be lost if we don’t appreciate them.”

In an effort to gain some insight on what traveling to these places may have been like for the original Picturesque America artists, Scott and fellow artist Mike Wurman hiked the Buncombe Turnpike, an 80-mile endeavor from Chimney Rock to Del Rio, Tennessee, dressed only in period-accurate clothing. “We were foolish,” Scott laughed. “We hiked in wool pants and suspenders. And no zippers whatsoever, only buttons existed in the 1800’s.”

Although the going may have been rough at times, Scott hopes that continuing that art that was done in the 1800’s will help people make the “three legged stool of connection”: to know the importance of the past, to live in the present, and to protect the future. The three-legged stool analogy stems from PAPA’s beacon of light, Harry Fenn, a Picturesque America artist responsible for the majority of the books’ artwork, who carried one with him to paint. “If things aren’t lining up when I’m where Harry was years ago, I squat down like I’m sitting on his little stool,” Scott said. “Suddenly, with that change of perspective, it all comes together.”

(CAPTION: A drawing of Harry Fenn, with his signature twisted mustache, can be found hanging proudly in the gallery.)

Scott founded PAPA as a 501(c)3 charitable organization, and they’re always looking for support from those who are able to give. All profits from art sales are donated to organizations that work to protect the sites featured in Picturesque America. Any donations to help keep the doors open and the lights on at the gallery are greatly appreciated! You can visit the gallery right outside downtown Saluda, immediately on the right after crossing over the train tracks. You can also support PAPA through various programs on their website, including conservation, site research, and providing at-risk youth the opportunity to experience art in nature.

In order to spread awareness and participation in PAPA, Scott welcomes all mediums into the gallery. Paintings, poetry, collages, sculptures — anything that helps tell the story of how precious our land really is. Whether it’s up for sale or donated to the gallery, there is no greater value in art than sharing it with the world.

Closing on exciting news, PBS has launched a pilot episode, America, the Land We Live In, which follows Scott on his journey to discover the sites from Picturesque America. To watch, you need only donate $5/month to gain access to PBS Passport, which includes all PBS content whenever and wherever you want. Also, make sure to let PBS know if you enjoy the pilot; with enough support, this could be the beginning of an entire series dedicated to locating and preserving those “unspoiled places”.

Poetry is Guilty

Almog Behar

Translated from the Hebrew by Shoshana Olidort — for Dareen Tatour1

She shouldn’t have written

If only she’d written

about the struggles of the trees,

if only she’d made use of metaphors

of sunset and silence,

if only she’d explained that these were just poetic exercises

and submitted a corrected draft to the court,

if only she’d demonstrated that a poem never

has a final version,

if only she’d declared that a poem has a writer and a speaker

and that the writer does not always agree with the speaker,

if only she’d mentioned that she once heard

that the best poets started writing poetry

in order to woo girls

but that poems don’t help with wooing boys,

if she’d whispered

that if the judge deciding her sentence

doesn’t know the language of the poem

and if the prosecutor demanding her punishment

doesn’t know the language of the poem

it’s because poetry has no language

but she shouldn’t have written

poems. Many verdicts

must be written,

many sentences

to ease the aches of the world

To kick off the arrival of spring, we will serve a lineup of tasty dishes for your enjoyment on Tuesday, March 26 from 5:30 to 7pm at the Saluda Senior Center. The menu includes seasonal favorites—baked ham, freshly made salads, deviled eggs, vegetable sandwiches, and scrumptious desserts.

As always, the meals are complimentary, and donations are gladly accepted. Come discover one of the town’s most delicious secrets, and bring your own plate, utensils, & cup/glass, if you’re able.

The recent Holy Smokes Chili Cook Off exceeded everyone’s expectations!  While each dish was a palate pleaser, Chip Broadfoot, rector at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, was the winner! His delicious Chancel Chicken Chili with Sacramental Sauce combines chicken, cannellini beans, and corn in a rich savory broth. Toppings include tortilla chips, cheese, sour cream, and cilantro! The recipe is on Chip’s Facebook page.

A big thank you to our other amazing chili chefs: Myron Bradley of First Baptist Church of Saluda, Rob Parsons pastor of Saluda United Methodist Church, and Tom & Jeannie Solomon of Saluda Presbyterian Church! Y’all made this event so much fun we’re planning to have it again next year!

See you for supper at the Senior Center the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month starting at 5:30!

WE NEED YOU TO HELP OUR SUMMER STUDENTS FROM ITALY

Please help expose our two high school seniors from Italy to activities in and around Saluda. They arrive in Saluda on July 10. Pam Gray has a list of all the possibilities that she will email to you or you can dream up your own activity….it can be as simple as taking them grocery shopping with you (yea, they asked for that!), or as complex as a drive and hike along the Blue ridge Parkway.  Please contact Pam at pmgray7@rsnet.org or 704-877-9615.
