BCMM members gather for microbiome science and fun

We’re thrilled to share the success of our inaugural BCMM Retreat at Asilomar State Beach, where over 60 participants gathered to exchange cutting-edge research, foster collaborations, and enjoy fun activities.

We enjoyed enlightening science talks by staff, graduate students, postdocs, and faculty. KC Huang from Stanford University gave an inspirational keynote lecture on using the microbiome to study physics concepts. The evening poster session and reception sparked great discussions and connections. We also had time for relaxation, with a volleyball tournament, a scavenger hunt, and beach strolls. The retreat was a blast, and we’re already excited for next year!

Thank you to all who made this retreat unforgettable.

Congratulations to the retreat poster competition winners: (left to right) Mohana Mukherjee (first prize), Holly Steininger (second prize), and Carlos Gomez and Rachel Rock (shared third prize).

BCMM will co-fund Catalyst awards

The Catalyst Program is UCSF’s translational accelerator focused on advancing UCSF discoveries for patient benefit and commercialization. This fall, the BCMM will co-fund up to two microbiome-focused projects that apply to the Catalyst Program. Applications will be accepted via the UCSF RAP Portal until September 30th. Get more info

James Gardner receives the prestigious W.M. Keck Foundation Award for 2024

For over half a century, the W.M. Keck Foundation has funded groundbreaking projects that challenge prevailing paradigms and have the potential to make a real-world impact. We are pleased to share that, this year, the award goes to the BCMM faculty member James Gardner. Congratulations!

Dr. Lu Yang to lead computational efforts at BCMM

We are very excited to welcome to our team Dr. Yang, who brings over 10 years of experience in multi-dimensional data analysis and integration of shotgun metagenomic, metabolomic, transcriptomic, immunologic, and clinical data. She will oversee all data analyses including the application of machine learning approaches to the analysis of prenatal metabolomic profiles and the development of models to identify discrete diet by microbiome interactions that govern the production of allergy-preventative metabolites.

The BCMM team is growing!

We are very pleased to welcome on board Dr. Ju Eun Jeon (top) as new staff specialist and Aaron Alberto (bottom) as staff research associate. We also would like to honor the 48 new BCMM community members who joined us this year. Become a BCMM member.

Upcoming events this Fall

The BCMM staff is busy organizing a variety of exciting events. We will kick off on August 14 with the interactive workshop “Perfecting the Elevator Pitch,” tailored to teach the art of concise and compelling communication. Connect with fellow trainees at our “Trainee Mixer” on August 22 and “Bugs & Brews” on September 11. Come join us on September 27 for the “Canvas & Cultures: Art-Science Soiree” to view art from your creative colleagues. BCMM, Bakar ImmunoX, and the Research Development Office are co-organizing a town hall meeting for UCSF faculty, set for September 25 at noon, on “Changes to the NIH Review Framework.”

BCMM Training and Outreach Initiatives

BCMM hosts undergraduate interns

This summer, the BCMM hosted two undergraduate interns through the Opportunities for All initiative. The interns, Addison (left) and Michaella (right), shadowed the tech hub teams, conducted informational interviews with UCSF researchers, and gave a presentation on their experience.

BCMM heads back to school

Earlier this year, we organized a STEM activity for 9th graders in Stahl Junior High School, Puyallup, Washington. Over 100 students, enrolled in the Pre-AP Biology class, had a unique opportunity to delve into the world of scientific research. They prepared detailed research proposals to request materials, executed their research ideas, and reported their findings. At the end of the school year, the winning team was honored at the 9th-grade award ceremony. This hands-on experience provided the students with a valuable understanding of the research process and fostered their passion for scientific exploration.
