Message from Commissioner Raquel A. Regalado,
District 7
| |
| |
As the mother of two neurodivergent young adults, I’ve spent the last 20 years working to make Miami-Dade a better place for young people like them to live, dream, and succeed. Here at the County, my focus has been on training and educating our workforce to welcome people of all abilities to our live, work, and play community. I’m proud of the departments that have taken on this mission, from our excellent police department to our top-notch library system and more. In March and April, I’m thrilled to partner with our Miami-Dade Police Department to launch an autism decal available to families that will help them frame a positive relationship with police.
The next step is building more educational and employment opportunities for the thousands of people in our community who want to find meaningful careers. We’re taking on this task in a variety of ways – from launching an innovative school-to-work pilot program with Miami Dade College Kendall Campus that includes internships and jobs, to working with the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau on an autism friendly designation for the entire county. We’re also talking directly to employers about the opportunities and support available to businesses willing to be part of the solution. It only makes sense in a tight labor market to identify and grow new sectors of loyal, capable workers right here at home.
If there is anything that Miami-Dade has proven as we have grown, it’s that our diversity is our secret sauce.
