MB MAGAZINE

The latest issue of MB magazine is out now!

Those lovable sea turtles are back for another nesting season in Miami Beach as you’ll discover in MB’s cover story, “It’s Turtle Time” on page 24. We take you on an in-depth journey into the lives at these beloved sea creatures and bring you the latest scientific thinking of how adult females manage to find their way back to the same beach where they were born — sometimes decades later — to lay their own eggs. Our article also discusses how climate change may be affecting the reproduction cycles of sea turtles.

Did you know that Miami Beach is the only municipality in Miami-Dade County that employs its own prosecutorial staff? They handle the types of criminal cases that the court system often refers to as quality-of-life cases. While such offenses do not involve serious injury, significant property damage or financial loss, they are important to residents and businesses. MB shadowed our prosecutors to bring you “Making the Case” on page 36.

Flip the Switch: Sea Turtle Season is Here

Sea turtle season in Miami Beach runs from April 1 through October 31. Our beach is a crucial nesting habitat for sea turtles. These amazing creatures are protected by law, so please do your part to keep them safe. Do not disturb or touch nesting sea turtles or hatchlings.

Report any disturbances or lost turtles to MyFWC Florida Fish and Wildlife at 1.888.404.3922, to Miami-Dade County Government at 305.310.3046 or to Miami Beach PD at 305.673.7900. Let's protect our beach ecosystem together!

Gas-Powered Leaf Blower Ban & Chainsaw Phase Out Period

Gas-powered leaf blowers are banned in Miami Beach. Additionally, gas-powered chainsaws are now being phased out per ordinance 2024-4589. These initiatives are part of the city's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Transitioning away from gas-powered leaf blowers and chainsaws not only helps to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, but also helps to improve water quality, mitigate noise pollution, and promote operational effectiveness.

The phase out period for gas-powered chainsaws:

Public Education: March 1, 2024 through October 31, 2024

Warning Period: November 1, 2024 through July 31, 2025

Full Enforcement: August 1, 2025

Balloon Free Miami Beach

Did you know that sea turtles, fish and birds mistake fallen balloons for food? Help keep our ocean and Biscayne Bay balloon free while protecting our Miami Beach ecosystem! Balloons are prohibited in public marinas, parks and beaches.

Environmentally friendly decor alternatives include: paper garlands, banners, streamers, flowers, pompoms, pinwheels, bubble-blowing solution and kites.

Fines range from an educational warning to a $100 civil fine for each balloon up to $1,000 for the first violation. Fines increase for repeated violations within the prior 12 months. Learn more.

Don't Be Trashy

Over 8,000 lbs of litter enters our water systems every year, which poses serious threats to our water quality and marine life. To help, discard your litter and recycling in marked receptacles.
